Hello everyone,

I fished a little as a kid and recently got back in to it.Got back in to it is an understatement as i'm now planning vacations and vacation time around my new favorite way to pass time. I only fish conservation and I'm having a hard time finding out where the reg's permit me to fish for steelhead during the winter months. I've checked different websites and it seems rather confusing. I live in the GTA and was wondering if anyone on the site knows of any rivers / tribs that are legal for fishing trout before the end of April. Also, any tips on finding / hooking these fish would be greatly appreciated.

hope to hear from some of the guys that have some experience with river angling.

tks.

kevin

I recommend re-reading the regs, but here's the nitty gritty

Open All Year:

Bronte Creek - South of Lakeshore Rd.
Credit River - South of Highway 403
Humber River - South of Eglington Rd.
Highland Creek - South of Hwy 2
Rouge River - South of Hwy 2
Duffins Creek, Oshawa Creek, Bowmanville Creek, Wilmot Creek - South of the CNR Bridge (the one that's closest to the lake)
Ganaraska River - South of the CNR Bridge

Extended season (October 1 - Dec 31):

Bronte Creek - South of Hwy 407
Credit River - Between Britannia Rd and Hwy 407
Humber River - South of Hwy 407
Rouge River - South of Hwy 407
Duffins Creek, Oshawa Creek, Bowmanville Creek, Wilmot Creek - South of Hwy 2

Thanks, i took your advise and checked the MNR regs again and found all the info that you outlined in your post in the exceptions portion of the document.

I checked out the Humber this afternoon and spoke to a couple of kids that said they had some luck throughout the day. I however only caught a couple of sticks on the bottom. I've put some hours fishing the credit over Nov and Dec and also had no luck. I plan to go out to the Humber on Friday morning again, i figure if i keep going out and trying different things i'm bound get something eventually. I might try some of the opportunities east of the city as well if I get the chance but i live in etobicoke so the humber is very convenient. I appreciate you replying to my post and i'm rather excited that i can fish the rivers year round!

thanks again!

Thanks Guys! Your words of encouragement go a long way!

I'll definitely report when I get one.

Howdy Kevin, lots of great information found deep within the Steelhead/Salmon section. River fishing is a learning curve and it takes time to get a hang off. Best of luck with your first fish, look forward to hearing about it :) Welcome to the forums.

Heres some tips on how to read the regs. The link below shows all of the zones in Ontario.

http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/LetsFish/Publication/STEL02_163615.html

Take Zone 17 as an example. The first place you look is the second page where it has the open seasons broken out by species. Right now trout is closed, so the next place you look is the exceptions which also start on the second page and go on to the third page. If you see a section of river listed as open then you can fish it.

On the flip side when you are fishing in the open season you can assume that all bodies of water are open EXCEPT for the areas listed as sanctuaries or having limited catch limits in the exceptions. It can be confusing but we always have to check the exceptions before fishing a new body of water.

Hey there welcome to off. A lot of tackle shops carry a copy of ontario regulations. This forum it awsome I started off not knowing anything about steelheading and wondering aimlessly on the riverside not knowing what I was doing. Till I bumped into some really great people here who made it there mission to get me onto the fish lol. Good luck :)
