well...

the first carp im my area was caught thursday march 15th... wow... i was happy to be the net man for the fine angler who caught it...

it was a pleasure fishing with this angler for the first time... he really taught me a lot about his veiws on carp fishing on the mighty st.lawrence river...

then with this crazy warm weather i knew i had to get out and try to catch my first ever "March" carp...using some "new to me" METHODS

2 groups of us "carpers" got out on sunday... 7 of us total...

the other group landed 1 and lost 5...

and we landed 3 and lost 1...and it was a biggun...it was spooling me until the hook pulled... but at least i got to land one later in the day...

we were sharing rods between the three of us in my group... so we each got to reel one in... and we all got rosy cheeks from the intense sun we had...

here's our catch for the day...

Hey I know that guy. Vali helped run the last CanAm we had there at Long Sault. It's good to see you are catching.

thats him... he gave me a great recipe for method fishing and explained the importance of very small baits this early... really really nice guy... i really hope i get to fish with him some more this year... very happy upbeat personality....

so not only was that my first March carp... but also my first method carp...

Awesome report Mike!

Great looking fish too.

I know that feeling when your fishing with someone that just really knows the ins and outs of certain species, and your just listening and watching everything trying to soak up the knowledge. If they have a great personality, then thats just a sweet bonus!

So, what is method fishing? (I've never caught carp, so I know nothing about carp fishing)

the basic carp setup is some form of slip sinker with a 4-12 inch leader to a hook....

method fishing... the sinker has a wire frame.... and you pack "method mix" around it.... the mix can be anything... mostly small stuff like seeds and corn mixed with bread...bread crumbs...oats

then when you cast it out...the ball you formed on the sinker breaks dowm and your left with a cute little pile of tasty crumbs around your sinker and your hook with a piece of corn on it...

its apparently effective in tough situations... like march...lol... when your goal is based on getting one bite at a time... unlike warmer times of the year when the goal is to establish a feeding frenzy with multiple carp so you create competative feeding situations...

this video shows the basics of method system

wicked that you are catching them in march.....
many of our harbour spots in toronto are unavailable to us to fish
as there is a current ban on toronto harbourfront fishing.....
no downtown carp for us in toronto anymore
