The one time I don't use my rod case and I put my rod in the trunk it breaks.... snapped off the two top rings from my two piece spinner.

I mean its only a $60 combo from CT, although I just finished my graduate program and I am on a TIGHT budget so another combo will only be damage to the wallet (until I find work).

SO, is there a best way to fix it, how much of the response/feel from the rod will I lose or is it worth purchasing and upgrading a bit.

Consider myself an intermediate bass angler so I do have time to save up a bit... but yeh, open to listening to options!

If you only broke the rod, I take it the reel is still fine?

What about just replacing the rod? I have a Rapala Magnum 7'0 from Walmart, couldn't have been more than $40. Or go on Kijiji, as the saying goes "my greatest fear is my wife selling my fishing gear for what I told her I paid for it." You should be able to find some inexpensive rods on there.

And hey, at least you didn't do that to a super expensive rod.

Snapped a $300 ross fly rod on a carp last summer, sent in for warranty, snapped it again on a salmon in the fall. LOL . on my third one now. no more salmons for this rod.

Dont bother trying to repair the rod, just grab a new one. you can get rods on sale at tackle shops for as little as $20.

yea just get a new rod if its a spinning reel u got, at canadian tire, there having a sale(at least were i am) 50$ and its ugly stick gtx2 combo
have fun breaking that lol! or get a bass rod. there mostly fast action. and durrable i have a abu garcia vendetta 6'6 2 peice and i can catch from perch to 10lb catfish.

but ugly stick is the way to go lol.

ugly sticks are hands down bombproof, my only issue with them was the weight, thats the reason i gave my 9' rod away to my cousin, but overall, pretty hardy and flexible at the same time,

Where do you guys get these rods. I only broke 1 rod. I was fishing for bass with my ultra light fenwick on worm & bobber and caught me a 15lb carp. it was a year old rod and i no longer had the receipt. took some pictures and model. and fenwick offered 50% on a new rod. my celilo (okuma) has been stepped on, dragged on pavement, fought 15lb + salmons...paired it with a trio spinning and both are pretty much holding up really good. same with my streamside rod. I don't shop at CT but that doesn't mean I'm not cheap. There are just other brands out there other than the norm you see at walmart & CT that are better but are just as affordable...

wow i never thought those okuma rods were made really tough, good to know! i remember the very first rod i bought its a daiwa d-force combo from CT, i pretty much used the rod for anything that i fish for, bass, salmon, walleye, carp, sunnies and i gotta say that it held up pretty good, but last year when i was organizing the rods in the holders it slipped off the wall, landed flat on the floor and it cracked around 2 giudes from the tip, i was gonna frame it and hang is on the wall so i just did my best to put it back together in one peice, i helped me alot to learn how to fish and taught me all the principles so it will always be with me hanging on my wall, definately worth more than a million bucks to me, well at least on sentimental value, LOL!!!!!

It's always good to do your research on these stuff. Every rod I shop I always ask for the specs. I'm sure some rods will hold fighting a salmon even if they're not built for it but it might do some damage that will not be seen and creat a weak link to your rod. Same with reels. I know not a lot of people will invest the way other anglers do but if you fish 4 seasons it would be smarter to do it.

Uglystik GX2 or Lite (around $40). -> Max durability, "meh" sensitivity. carbon fiber/fiberglass hybrid construction.

Basspro Graphite series ($40, but often on sale for $30 or 20) -> very acceptable durability, a bit better sensitivity than uglystik GX2. a tad lighter too. IM6 graphite, so the flex is a more like a fiberglass.

Iv also used a quantum rod (forgot model, friend got it as a $65 combo from CT), and was pretty darn nice.

Since you are only looking for a rod, and a strong, dependable rod, id say go for Uglystik GX2 or Lite.

Lite -> only does up to Med power, more sensitive than GX2, lighter, but its not meant for BIG fish. 5yr warranty
GX2 -> goes from UL to Hvy power, not as sensitive as Lite, a tad heavier, takes on ANY fish. 7yr warranty
BPS -> just a tad more sensitive than Lite. I THINK its lighter than the Lite, but with proper reel, it balances out. 1 year, no hassle, over-the-counter warranty

ugly stick is good value for the money but i havent used mine in a long time..

the basspro im6 microlite or w/e they call them are better imo. have had a 9'6 one and a 6' one and im very rough on my gear. never let me down..
even closed my trunk on the 6 foot one and it still didnt snap, just got a little scuff on it.

and they have a pretty good warranty and the best part is. it isnt heavy like the ugly sticks can be.

plus you hook into something big it has enough give that the line will snap before your rod does. which is another plus. ugly stick can also do this though. :)

ugly stick sure is durable though. ive had the eyes crack before the rod splintered lol. you really can bend it end to end and it wont break

Also, Uglystik Lite/GX2 has stainless steel guides (not very durable if you use braid), and BPS Graphite Series rod has some sort of ceramic (Pacific Bay Hialoy, much better than stainless guide, if you consider using braid/heavy mono). I think the BPS Micro Lite are stainless steel guide as well.

BPS Graphite Series goes up to Med-Hvy power, BPS Micro Lite only goes up to Med-Light.

That bendy-ness is a double edged sword. Very useful for durability and control of fish, but takes away some sensitivity and may also take away some hook setting power, especially with mono, at long distance.

Real men wear safety glasses. With the amount of effort he is putting in to that bend I wouldn't think you'd lose to much setting power?

you do lose power.. how bendy a rod doesnt prove how strong is it for lifting or setting hooks.
think of noodly rods like rubber bands.. how much pulling do you need to do until that rubber doesnt stretch anymore..
all that stretch is wasted power.

the "backbone" of a rod comes from a stiff lower half and middle of rod. if that part bends.. it doesnt have power.

for me.. if i want unbreakable (hard to break rods) i always go for my jigging rods..
i actually have one of these at home, classed ultra lite. also really does deadlift 20 lbs off the floor like in this test vid

factory noise warning

well now were in a differnt subject. we were talking about an afordable rod that will last along time from its durability. if u want an all round good rod u need the dough

Another option which many don't realize is to go to a shop, such as Angling Specailty or Aikmen's in Mississauga, where they do a lot of rod/reel repair. They may have a top piece of a spinning rod that you can get for cheap. These are usually pieces from other broken rods (for example, the bottom piece of the rod broke near the handle...but the top piece is fine...so now they have extra top pieces). Yes, you'll be mixing and matching...but sometimes with some very pleasant surprises. If you are lucky, you may even find the exact match for your rod (ie, same model).
