I headed out with a buddy on friday morning and we had a great day in Gilford. With the help of the Navionics app on my iPhone we were able to take the guessing game out of finding the locations of the drop offs and deep holes. If you don't have a GPS with lake depth info this app comes in very handy. Once we found them we where hammering them from 18-30ft. All day I used a small shiner teardrop jig tipped with a pinhead that produced consistently all day. I'm still smiling. Here are the few I brought home for the dinner table. The one I'm holding was the largest of the bunch. Approximately 13-14".

We had a few challenges through the day, like frozen rod guides (if anybody has any suggestions please share) and the light but constant wind blowing across the lake from the south reeked havoc on my friends Marcum. Freezing up the knobs and packing the viewing screen area so bad that it was rendered useless. but to be honest things it didn't really slow us down. We just kept punching holes and dropping lines.

I had a great time. Next time out I want to get on to some Pike... if anyone has any pointers, tips and tricks that they would like to share it would be appreciated.

Very nice, it seems like the perch action in cooks is better than last year. I wish they had the Navionics app for blackberry or even just something you could log into using your browser.

Thanks for the report Mutt248. Lots of people there yesterday.

How is this Navionics app? It is worth the money($15 something)? Which lakes does it have the charts for? Are the maps saved on your cell or you need to use data to get them each time ( can become a problem on remote waters where the cell phone signal is weak). Appreciate having some details.

nice mess of perch, looks like you did well, sounds like you had to battle some conditions but kept at it and nailed some nice perch :)

The app works surprisingly well and well worth the money. So far I have used it on georgian bay's Honey Harbour and Simcoe's Cooks Bay out of Gilford. I have been able to use the app with great success. Just for the ability of trolling and dropping lines through the ice on drop- offs have paid for the app in my books. At the moment I'm in the market for a fishfinder with GPS and a flasher unit for the hard water but until then the iPhone comes to the rescue again. LOL.

As for the Lake and charts I believe it covers most but don't take my word for that. You can check out their website for those details.

The mapping is an online application that unfortunately you have to use your data. So far I have have not had any problems with signal but your right it may be a problem, if that is concern I would pick up their navi chip and utilize it in an on board GPS/Finder unit.

As for any down sides to the app is that if you are using it to track you path it will drain you battery faster then a fat kid eating a smartie. I strictly using it for marking points and thats about it.

Thanks and all the best.

sounds exactly like the day we had on Thursday except it was twice as cold and very strong winds...my face is still frozen lol. We jigged swedish pimples all day in 121 FOW and had non stop action we even hooked into a few hering but put them back cause the season's closed, did you and your buddy get any hering? as far as the frozen guides go we just rubbed chapstick on them and it was all good.

Yeah we did. It was amazing to watch the large pos of hearing pass under our holes. We hooked in to about 5 or 6 and got them back down the hole as soon as we could. All were carbon copies of the next. all about 12"-13" and chrome as all hell.

Thanks for the tip with the guides!
