So after lots of asking questions on here and on the creeks I finally narrowed it down and bought my starter Centrepin setup. Decided on a Okuma Guide Select Rod in 13'6". It's IM8 and a lot lighter in the hand than the Raven, and with a bad shoulder it means something to me. Went with the Rapala Shift reel as I was really impressed with how smooth it felt. Pretty excited to get this, it's on lay away will pick it up tomorrow. All said out the door for $380.

Yeah I liked the cost of the Okuma but for an extra $30 bucks I just felt better buying the Raven!!

Pretty upset with the reel!! After putting line on there was a gap between spool and housing, this meant line went behind spool every cast!! Not sure if I got a reject or what but it will be going back. Hopefully I can get a refund and not a run around as this reel is not right! Gun shy towards Rapala reels now that's for sure.

Post a picture of the spool and the gap between spool the backplate, I know of a few guys that have the same reel without any issues make sure you dont spool too much line on the reel that might be the issue of line going in the gap..give the reel a spin and look carefully of the see if there is any wobble or play in the spool. If there is wobble the spool will ride up and down while it spins, to check for play grab the spool and backplate as if your gonna seperate the two, to check for play. Where did u buy the reel? If it don't feel feel right strip the line off clean it up and return the reel.

I've aleady got the line off the reel and yes it wobbles when spinning very slight but it does. The gap was very noticeable with line on, my one coworker who has been using pins for almost 30 years says he's never seen anything like it. It is going back, I bought this one at Sail. Gagnons has a few so I might just take refund and get same one there as I do really like it.

go with the rapala classic drifter, matrix, or okuma Sheffield, and up the mainline to 10lb to avoid trapped line, all these reels are cheaper than the shift and imo as a first pin you should learn on a standard model and save the offsets till after you master casting and line control, just my opinion though.

I have never held a rapala classic drifter before but have heard great reviews on it, some guys say it compares to the higher end reels...it might be worth checking out......

Ok so I took reel back to Sail, went to Gagnons. They price matched same reel. Got out and had no issues with reel other than I can't cast it. Reel is smooth though pull the line out perfect, it's so smooth and it's so nice doing those long drifts. Too bad the fish weren't playing nice. Got one hit and miss and my little guy lost one.
