Hi everyone.

I was looking at trying my luck at ice fishing this year over simcoe going for perch one day and maybe pike/white/lake trout some other time.

My question is how many rods including tip ups are you allowed to have in the water at one time.

Also any advice on ice fishing would be greatly appreciated as I'm extremely new to it and just trying to get an early prep start on it

"Two lines may be used for ice fishing except in a limited number of waters (see the exceptions for the Zone in which you are fishing). You must be within 60 m
(197 ft.) at all times of any line or tip-up you are using when ice fishing and you must have a clear and unobstructed view of the lines being used at all times.
Any spring-loaded device which sets the hook for an angler may not be possessed within 30 m (98 ft.) of any waters."

That was taken directly from the 2016 regulations and to my knowledge, there are no exceptions for lake Simcoe, so you should be okay with 2 lines.

In terms of advice for the species you wish to target, I would say for perch, your best bet is jigging micro jigs tipped with wax worms, grubs or small minnows or even minnow heads, small flies work well, and jigging raps can trigger big strikes from jumbo perch.

For pike, your best bet is a large minnow or sucker, dead or alive, on a quick strike rig a few feet from bottom. I like to set this up on a tip up a few feet from the shack and then aggressively jig a lipless crank bait in the shack to get them curious.

Lake trout will typically suspend halfway in the water column in relatively deep water, anywhere from 100' up to 40' depending on conditions but a variety of baits imitating baitfish will work well, jigging spoons, soft jigging swimbaits, live minnows, however, an often overlooked food source for lake trout is crustacean. So i will sometimes dead stick small shrimp patterns suspended where you feel the fish are cruising and they will sometimes inhale it just out of instinct.

Ive never fished for whitefish but from what I hear, lots of people catch them targeting lakers on simcoe so I would say small minnow should do the trick but i'm sure there's certain techniques for those fish too.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for the awesome info it will come in handy for sure. Sorry for taking so long to thank you just been busy with a newborn.

My best advise.
Wait for winter. ha
Oh and congrats on the newborn.
Welcome to parenting on demand.
Best thing I ever did. 3 times.
Enjoy

Do NOT go for lakers without a graph or flasher. You will waste your time. Trust me, I've been there!

If ice fishing is new to you, I'd rent a hut.

I've had good luck with whitefish on Simcoe using salties (salted minnows).
I make my own and usually rig them very near bottom in about 30' of water.
