Went up to the cottage this weekend on Canal Lake. Left Friday from downtown and got there just before dark; just enough time to set up the boat and putz around. I was dropping watermelon/silver flake senko-type sinking worms and getting taps fom little bluegill and quarterpound bass. Once the sun went down, I threw a spinnerbait as it cause more vibration in the water. The upsize paid off with a bigmac:

Next morning I get a small dinky bass on a spinnerbait second cast right out in front of my place. I notice there are not too many people out on the causeway bridge that morning and was wondering if the board member who was asking about the lake made it up. I text message Halleb, a board member here, who was asking questions about fishing the lake last week. He's at the bridge with his son. I pull up and, although I never met Halleb prior, I could tell who he was as he casts out a white spinnerbait just as I had advised on his post. I ask how their luck has been; Skunk thus far he tells me. I offer Halleb and his son to come on the boat and do a little fishing, they look at each other and have that "hell ya" look, lol. Very nice gentlemen, Halleb and his son were, we drifted about casting and exchanging stories. We were looking for pike, but as I was explaing to my new friend, there sweems to be more bass this year than hungry pike..then Halleb gets his first:

Pretty nice, say about 2 to 2 1/2 pounds. His son casting a J-9 gets one soon after. We are still looking for Halleb's pike when I see his rod bend over; this is a pike for sure I thought. When it comes to the boat I put the net under a very nice nickel, and Halleb and his son are smiling as he admits it is his PB bass, congrats!

and a great release too

As the sun got higher in the sky, the fishing slowed down big time. I dropped off Halleb and his son back at the bridge. Great meeting you guys; hope you had a good time!

On the way back to the cottage I stop at a panfish spot and drop a half senko. Tiny nibbles, hard to get hook up; then I pull in my PB perch...12.5 inches in total!!! this thing was massive for a perch:

The rest of the weekend fishing was slow. Got a couple more quarterpound bass and just as I announced I was not fishing for pike (That was the trick halleb, lol) I nail a respectable scrapper.

Tight lines all,

excellent report!
looks like you guys had a good time.
beauty bass, monster perch and a respectable northern.

definitely looks like canal is worth a canoe trip!

reefrunner, you know if the the area around the public boat launch just after the bridge where the people fish is any good?

Thanks guys.

Frozenfire, the spot you mention is a tad shallow I've been told only holding panfishes. If you're in a boat (or a canoe on a calm day) just straight out from there there is a sunken Island, a little timber and rocks can be seen poking out of the surface. Fishing there is pretty good. By canoe, you can safely make it under the bridge over to the West-side of the lake; a little deeper and less thick weeds, better fishing.

Thanks for the advice reefrunner... much appreciated.
Perhaps I may run into you on a weekend on your lake

Hey guys,

I was just sitting down, getting ready to write the report of our adventures at Canal Lake, when I saw that reefrunner was faster & already posted about it . We definitely had a very good time, it was all made so much better when reefrunner was so kind to invite us on his boat, we are very happy and thankful for opportunity to fish from the boat. His boat is very nice, stable and quite enough room for several people to fish. It was great to meet a member of the board in person and to make new friend and fishing buddy.

Unfortunately, I did not get my pike I was so much wishing for. On the boat we were wishing and "praying" to land the pike , but we were catching bass instead. So reefrunner and I were joking saying we must change our "tactics" and declare that we are fishing for bass only, NOT for pike ! . In the end, this seem to have worked , for him at least. So good job there reefrunner , nice jumbo perch & very nice pike too, I wish you got it when we were together, but congratulations nevertheless!!

My oipinion and conclusion about the Canal Lake -it is very nice but if you do not have a boat - your chances to get nice fish, i.e. nice pike, are greatly reduced. There is a lot of weeds in the lake and lake is all one giant hiding place for fish, so you got to "work the water" .

Anyways, when we parted with reefrunnermy son and I went on fishing from the shore around the bridge, but no success. Then we went to nearby "swing bridge" - the place that was also recommended to us by reefrunner. Besides catching a lot of small fish (perch & rock mass mainly) my son (aka basshunter on this board) also managed to catch one LM bass and one smallmouth bass, using pink trout worms under the float.

(Sorry about quality of the photo - it was taken by cell phone .

Thanks for great weekend reefrunner !

It was my pleasure halleb! I'm glad the swing bridge worked out for you guys. I had a great time fishing with you two.

Thanks for the reports guys. Nice to see you land a PB perch. What a monster. Great bass and pike also.

Glad you guys were able to meet and hookup with success. Hopefully will lead to further hookups on the water.
