I'm new to these forums. I fish when I can lately I have taken up steelheading but in the summer I fish for what ever bites in the local ponds with my 4 year old son or try for carp.

Hey Jason, welcome from Hamilton.
You posted that the 21st and FishingNoob still hasn't asked what set up you use  Sorry inside joke. Noob normally asks all new comers that question.
I've fished Jordan Harbor a few times with mixed results, the best being a 15 lb Channel Cat. How are all those tribs with names like 20 mile and 16 mile or however many miles that cross the QEW. Don't name any here, but is there Chrome in some of those rivers?
You do have a lot of good areas near you in Beamsville and I'm sure a 4 year old would be totally thrilled to see a big carp.

Alfie.

Most of the creeks are pretty good until the water dries out or they close it down for the trout season there are a few places to get trout and salmon one of them is usually pretty packed. My son seems to be interested in the catching fish part it's the waiting he has a hard time with.

maybe try taking him for panfish or perch? you can easily catch one every 5 minutes if theyre biting..

i started fishing when I was really young on these, they were lots of fun for me and developed my fishing skills a lot (even though most times i got tangled i went to my dad for help)

That's mostly what I take him out for he seems to like catfish too but hates looking at them. I was thinking about taking him to a trout pond but I might just bring him drifting with me and set him up with my old rod .

good idea.. let us know how it goes, good luck!

edit: just realized he's 4, float fishing might be a bit difficult..only you know what he's capable of though, kids are amazing learners too as you obv know)

So far I have had him float fish with a spin cast.(terrible idea) but with spring coming i should be able to get him into some fish.

Hahaha you beat me to the punch Alfi! :D

I don't check out the welcome section as much as I should...

Welcome aboard Jason!

Here's my tip:

Get him set up with a cane pole (bamboo stick with some line attached). It might not be the greatest fishing technology out there but it will save you messing around with tangles which will give him more fishing time. As well he can help you make one, ( I mean why buy one???) which he might enjoy. If he makes it and catches a fish on it he'll be ecstatic!

Use a small size 12 or up hook, the smaller the hook the more fish, cause more fish can fit it in their mouth. From my experience, kids don't really mind the size so long as it is on the end of their line. Use a float (the absolute smallest you can get, not a tennis ball size one) :D

Tie the hook to the end of the line and add a few split shots below the float. Just fling or place the float out and wait. Use corn, bread, chunks of worms, gummy worms anything!

Hope I helped.

Recognize the handle from the NFN I believe, welcome to OFF. Any places around your place full of gobies? Lots of action and you don't need to worry about casting and such ;)

Yep that would be me thanks! There's a few places but he wants to catch big fish so he says and actually likes casting. I heard there was a trout farm around here I could try that or maybe take him to mainland again its a pain finding places with slow moving water to bring him even on the pier he's in a life jacket.
