Hi Guys,
During a search for info on Ontario fishing I stumbled on this forum. I joined to hopefully pick your brains and gather some tips for a trip some buddies and I have planned for next year fall (September).
Name is Jeroen, I live in a rural part (we actually have those) in The Netherlands (Groningen) and work as freelance journalist, with fishing as a long term subject. The trips my friends and I make usually end up in magazines in Europe and (sometimes) beyond. That is, if the local people we fish with don't mind me sharing some of their knowledge. All within the boundaries of proper integrity.
I am a 99% fly fisho and completely addicted to the cold water saltwater stuff. Favourite country (haven't been to Canada yet) is Norway, as this country has more easily accessible fly fishing in fresh and saltwater than any country I know. I like to combine trout, grayling and char-fishing with fly fishing for Atlantic cod, coalfish (pollock) and Atlantic halibut. As most of these species do abound your waters to, it would be great to compare notes with like-minded souls.
As for our trip: we would like to plan a DIY trip to experience some of the fresh water fishing Ontario has to offer. We are especially interested in smallmouth bass on (topwater) flies, maybe shallow water lakers, brookies and splakes and hopefully musky. Northern pike is a nice bonus, but we do have plenty of those (in serious sizes) at home, so we want to concentrate on the species we don't have.
I am hoping that any of you can give us tips on accommodation that won't break the bank for us, with proper facilities like a roof over our head and decent boats. We have checked a number of lodges and found some options within our budget (house keeping style, two guys in a boat).
I may have to open a new post for this, but if anyone has some info for us, regarding the season (we are limited to September), I'd be very grateful.

Thanks for the welcome.

Best regards,
Jeroen (I won't bore you with my tongue twister family-name)

Welcome to the side Jeroen! If you want a good shot at the species you mentioned you'll want to go up north, there are plenty of small motels and full out lodges depending on what you're looking for, maybe something in the Kenora area?

Hi Christopher,
Thanks for your reply. I'll check out the Kenora area. We are on a tight budget, so expensive fly-in camps are out of bounds for us. We'll try to find a deal with a cabin and a boat. We did check out a couple that look promising, but are always open for suggestions.

Cheers,
Jeroen

welcome, you'll definitely love it here in september, lots of monster salmon and steelhead, then if you decide to head north a bit there are tons of lakes and rivers practical unfixed with lots of cold water species

What's your budget? Send me a PM I can recommend a few places that shouldn't break the bank and you won't have to go north for Also welcome to OFF.

I doubt anyone who has fished in Norway wants to deal with boots in the creeks ;) Of course you may be able to get into some steelhead up in the Thunder Bay area, but sea trout are pretty close to steelies in terms of fishing style.

Cheers guys for the response! Although I love all types of fishing, including swinging a fly over salmonids, we want to experience some stillwater action. As we haven't yet caught smallies, muskies and lakers (if we can find them in higher water levels), they'll be topping our wishlist. With some small creek stalking as an added bonus if possible.

as being a topwater-deerhair-flytying-enthousiast it would be great to get smallies or pike on the surface ;)
the kind of buggers I had in mind :)
