NEw to baitcast need a good reel

I want to get a Bait cast for pitching and for frogs I just don't no much about the different models and such can anyone recommend a pretty good one.

I will be going to basspro next weekend.

I am no expert on bait cast reels

but once you decide on your reel you might want to check out Lebaron

they are having a no tax sale till the 20th of march

also i find that lebaron's prices are better than Bass Pro's

For fishing slop and thick cover you'll want a reel with a strong drag do yourself a favour and pick up an abu revo any of them are good and range in prices. I think there rated at about 24lb of drag which is phenomenal. Great reel at an even greater price. If not the revo than shimano citicas or curados are reasonably priced dynamite reels.

yup thats the one its the base model but none the less a great reel and if your looking for really cheap than checkout the daiwa strikeforce or the shimano caenan theyre both around 80 bucks.
honestly though dont go for anything to cheap, baitcasting reels are complicated peices of machinery and the cheaper ones dont hold up to well, its better to pay an extra $50 and get something thats gunna last you a while. But you cant go wrong with any of the reels ive mentioned. personally for heavy cover fishing id go with the revo though for pretty much anything else the other reels will do great.

ps whatever you do stay away from plfueger baitcasters or the bps ones, horrible

Really that's good to no because all I buy is plfueger spinning reels.

They're baitcasters have not stayed smooth at all. The spinning reels are ok mechanically. i have a president that i use for chinnies not sure if youve noticed this but the bodies seem extremely weak, broke the reel seat the first day and the bail a week after getting it repaired, mind you i can be rough on my tackle but still not very impressed with the quality of any of there reels imo.

Really I have never had a problem with them I have 4 now and just got the new supreme xt the other 3 are Presidents. I use them for everything bass, crappie, pike and even salmon.

I also recommend the shimano caenan. It spins nearly as smooth as my curado 200E. Only thing I dont like is that it's graphite. Not sure how durable its going to be.

Unfortunately, Pfluegers only come in right hand retrives. I have also had great experience with my BPS Pro Qualifier, which is right around $100. These reels are super value with dual cast control, countless retreive ratios in both left and right handed versions. They are pretty smooth, and have been good to me, and my friends who have them as well.

What retrieve are you looking for? This might change what youc an look at if you are lefty. Some reel companies do not make all of their offerings in lefty models.

Nope didn't know that. Like i said though havent had much luck with pflueger or bps, revos on the other hand have been great to me. They're not as refined as a curado or citica but they are a workhorse. They must use different standards or materials or something for the revos because i've noticed a huge difference.

I am not sure what gear ratio I need, I also use my right hand to reel.

What gear ratio should I get for all around.

for heavy cover you want a higher gear ratio to land a fish quickly from the thick stuff. Its also good for fishing deep water as you'll be able to reel in your line faster or if you want to run and gun different areas where you need to cover lots of water a fast as possible. 7:1:1 is a good gear ratio. Remember its easier to slow down your retrieve than speed it up so a higher gear ratio will be more versatile.

I agree with Despotiko in that a higher gear ratio is ideal for the techniques you identified. More important than gear ratio is the retrieval per turn of the handle. Some manufacturers have 6.x:1 ratios that retrieve as much line as 7.x:1 ratios from other manufacturers. So you can consider 6.x:1 ratios from some manufacturers if their line retrieval is comparable to the 7.x:1's out there.

As far as all purpose gear ratios, I myself prefer the 6.x:1 ratios. Has a little more power than 7.x:1 gears while still being plenty fast enough for me. This power can come in handy if you happen to be throwing high resistance lures such as large bladed spinnerbaits or deeper crankbaits.

Perhaps the BPS and Pflueger reels you have used were from before they began using the same OEM?

The only reels I've ever had any problems with are Quantums. EVERY quantum I've owned has fallen apart on me and I am not rough on my equipment.
I have had a citica and it was great. Unfortunately I lost it in a move. I have heard many good things about the Revo's and that's what I'll probably be grabbing this summer.

Wow. I thought they were good I have mine for ten years and still goin strong. Lol. I lube it every year thats it an I used it for everything including salmon. I have the one that's all metal
