I went back to a hole I found last week to check if there are steels...still there. But what I saw was there's another fish in there. brown with white stripes. Are these suckers? and it seems they're feasting on some redds. I have the gear i use for carp but i don't know if they work on suckers. it's hard to target for them because the area is close for trout but the sight was disturbing. they outnumber the trout 1 / 10.

Sounds like suckers to me nd they're everywhere!

Just wanted to jump in and point out some "fish interactions":

The suckers, chubs, shiners etc. are all NATIVE SPECIES that lay the groundwork for a Healthy Bow (Introduced species) population.

Suckers eat "some bow eggs".... (Cull the harvest - thus keeping the wild populations stronger)
Bows eat "TONS of Sucker eggs" (They regenerate / feed like pigs before heading back out to the lake)

The suckers who live in DEEP LAKE WATER most of the year ... help a dozen or so other species.
Without their generous GIFT of LIFE ... we'd all be pooped.


*Next time you head out ... go find the sucker pods and watch for the Bows feasting like pigs behind them!
HINT: if you use the Real Mckoy for bait or an imitation, I can bet you will have a great outing.


Hope you can at least Respect the Sucker.
It has done more for sustaining the BOW FISHERY than anything else, period.

The guy I met while fishing had an interesting idea...we caught a female sucker and squeezed some roe out of her, tiny tiny orange eggs, he then said "I wonder if the bows feed on this stuff on their way back DOWN to the lake"

And that really got me thinking....what if they DO? I mean...it makes a lot of sense, there's a TON of suckers laying eggs, and what would stop the trout from feeding on them on the way down to the lake?

We used to fish suckers as kids. A lot like catfish. We would use worm balls to avoid hooks. Sucker mouths and hooks are messy companions. File the barbs off if you are going to use hooks...

The reason I never decided to fish for them as soon as I saw them is because the area is a close section for trout. Nice neighbourhood so wouldn't want to fish the area special 1 week prior to opening. really lots of them but man the bows are dark and long. Thanks for the infos. But if anyone is into suckers...the area is a haven.
