I was fishing a western trib Sunday with a friend. All of a sudden the water exploded right by us and we watched as a guy landed a beautiful chunk of Chrome about 5 lbs.
We were at least 40 miles up from the mouth of the trib. We thought it was just an oddity.
The fellow we watched kept his fish. Half an hour later I saw one trying to make it up over the rapids and then saw another or perhaps the same one trying to swim up the rapids again an hour later. As we were leaving I talked with another angler who told me he saw one in a pool that day, I don't know this guy so I'm not sure how reliable he is or how close he had been to where we were.
At least 2 Rainbows were seen that day and 1 was definitely trying to go upstream when spotted. Anyone seen any in the tribs this year yet or this early in previous years? Are Skamania making a come back or is this really just an oddity? The water was quite warm.

I remember looking for chinny's this time of year a couple years ago, looking down by the fish ladder I counted several rainbows mixed in with the few salmon that were waiting to go up, I thought it was slightly odd as well, seeing as it was mid august, but within the last couple years I have found a spot where we actually get steel consistently this time of year, maybe just smart bows that are looking for early eggs?

Since the salmon are already up many tribs. , I was going to say that rainbow followed the salmon. Since your river hosts no salmon, they must of been triggered by the recent storms and high water ?

Could be a hold over from spring... happens here and there. Like you mentioned - could be skamania. Either way its refreshing to see :)

i've spotted a few on a trib as well. smaller than your average salmon and like any rainbows...you can barely see them on the current until they see you first and they run (specially when you least expect them to be there). and i've seen full loads of brown swimming with their salmon friends as well. Thursday will have decent rain...can't wait to say..."and so it begins..." in the GTA tribs.

Actually staffman, the water was as low as I have seen it in my couple trips there this year, but yes I guess they could have entered during or after recent storms.

The thought of hold overs from the spring did occur to me Dozer. The one did appear headed up-stream though. And if they are Skamania that would be totally refreshing to see, last time I caught them was on Huron tribs about 15 years ago, but what a fun fish. I have heard that they are still stocked on the U.S. side and some may stray over here.

Anyway, my friend and I are going back this week-end with some different gear and see what happens. I'll keep you guys posted on what happens.

Alfie.
