Nothing like fresh gear!

Picked up a new reel today: An Orvis Battenkill Bar Stock III loaded with double taper floating line and an extra spool loaded with weight-forward sinking tip line. All these shiny things for $170... Booya! Cant wait to try it out this weekend.

Not hard to learn. Hard not to go crazy and buy really nice gear.......lol. Beginner outfits are around $100 and up. Get what you paid for applies here. Not for the frugler........lol. Unless you start off used equipment.

i started used with a golden eagle rod and reel, and hipwaders new for 60. came to total 100.

When i decided to get into fly fishing i bought one of those scientific anglers started kits that came with a rod, reel, beginner dvd and a couple flies. If i could do it all over again i would buy decent gear from the start. Ive had that starter kit for about 3 months and ive already replaced the reel lol. The rod is the next thing to be changed on the list but for now its ok.

I second that! It may be expensive but IMO always opt for gear that have lifetime warranty. I am a ROSS reel fanatic. They are expensive (certain modles more than others) but they are quality reels with great drags and their warranty is amazing. Same for rods. You break it, send it in and either get a repair or new one. If you fish a lot, things are bound to happen.
