LOL...Ok, so I thouht I was being brave when I went out yesterday afternoon with only my baitcaster in tow, on a blustery day...looking for the ellusive pike. I was filled with confidence...but little did I realize that fate had other things in mind for me. I hit the foot of Spadina at about 2:15pm, wind was wipping through the harbor...I started casting out, and the rod was feeling pretty good ( I had started with setting the tension, and dial up till I had a smooth drop) But then a worker stopped me, there was a diver working in the area, so I moved to the sheltered bay near the fire station. Now this is where my problems begin. I get acouple of casts off no problem, but then the wind picks up and changes direction, moving straight in towards me, acouple more casts and some minor birds nests, but get them untangled no problems...continued on and the all of a sudden POP goes my reel tension nob and the washer. Mad scramble to stop them falling into the lake, get it all back together...ohh and in the meantime I have a wicked birdsnest, and my lure is sitting out 45 feet. So I start working on the birdsnest...still workin...still working, POP...arrrg again it comes off, this time right into the drink! I fumed for 5 minutes and threw my hands up and walked away. I am an idiot! I admitt it. Oh well...down to just me and my spinner...something I can feel comfortable with. I blame the weather (wind) and my lack of experience for this fiasco, but I will repair and get it up and running again, and keep at it...practice makes perfect!

Just thought I would share!

that sucks, imagine how upset you would be if there was a monster pike on the other end and you were busy on on the bird nest. would of never happened with spining reel ;)

Yes
I hear you, when the wind is strong , blustery and blowing right in your face it is time to put away the baitcaster.
Windy days like today I end up using my spinning gear.
Jose

nice story, bad luck, sound like a pretty hectic time, i tried fly fishing in these conditions once, never gonna do it a gain, the wind caught the line and the fly ripped open my neck right over the collar bone, and it left a bad scar too ;)

Sorry to hear that, I only used my baitcaster once last year, had a birdnest untangled it up came a perch wtf! still haven't used my baticaster since.

hahaha...

David, i thought you were gonna say that all of sudden pike smacked your lure that was seating 45ft out...
taking the fishing gear out of your hands into the water or something.

Aren't you glad the lure was in water 45 ft away, & not lodged in the vicinity of your collar-bone? So, look at the bright side & stop feeling sorry for yourself. I spent an hour like that at the Bluffers earlier this week. The temperature was supposed to be +4, but it was freezing out there in the wind. It was even icing up on the guides... and here I was dressed like it was a warm spring day. But one hit on my crankbait (lasted all of 10 seconds!) made me stay there an over an hour. Needless to say, took me an hour or so to thaw out after the adventure...

Ouch, do you still have a warranty on your reel? Most have a 1 year warranty at the store, and I think it should be free of charge.

i learned how to use a baitcaster in my back yard with no water, so it shouldn't be for you, and i didn't have instructions either

you just have to try fishing with us.... things like this happen to dave and i regularly...like last fall..
salmon snaps a 6 month old net pole in half while dave is netting a salmon for me...the net bends in half ...the salmon slides out on a rock..flips into the water and swims off....i swear i saw it smiling....i look at dave and he looks at me ..both in complete disbelief of what this fish just did to us...if its not the fish its the weather or a boat.. or a tree ....dave and i have hard luck fishing like Ren and Stimpy cartoons....but fishing still brings us happiness....
