Ok so my father went out to Calgary and I thought I'd get him to grab me some stuff with basically no tax. As I'm new to salmon I gave basic instructions as to what I was looking for. Bass pro employee sent him out with trolling gear I'm sure it's heavy duty enough but what are the chances I'm going to be able to actually cast with the below set up? I have been searching online for two days but find nothing more the reviews from people trolling

Reel
Daiwa accudepth plus 27lcw
12 lbs 450 yds.
20 lbs 210 yds.
Ratio 4.2:1
I will also add I have never used a "bait cast" style reel

Rod
Rapala rsc96hc2
9'6"
Leadcore/copper hvy action
18-45 lbs test

Hopefully someone will have some answers for me I'd rather return/exchange before I set everything up head out to the water only to be disappointed.

Thanks in advance

Tough to get good answers on downrigging gear on this forum as there are only a few guys on the forum here that down rig. Dozer the mod and Triniboy do some trolling for salmon and trout so they may be able to help you.

Now if you were looking for a pier casting setup than there would be tons of answers here.

Hey Erik,

The equipment that you’ve indicated is strictly geared towards down rigging with zero chances of doubling as casting gear.

Not sure if this helps but can PM me if you have further questions..

I am lookin for pier casting set up that's my problem but I think I traded the above mentioned items for something that may work better for me (hopefully)

Rapala rsc
9'
Med power med action
3/8-3/4 oz.
8-12 lbs test

Pflueger president 6904
Braid capacity 320/10 280/14 200/20
Ratio 5.2-1

I'm fairly sure reel is what I need rod I'm 50/50 about

Hey Erik,

Did you mean the Pflueger president 6940 can't find anything on 6904 series and as for the rod I would chk the side above the handle it would indicate what type of rod.. As far as I know the Rapala rsc series rods are mainly downriggers rods and or Dipsy rods... Could be wrong, what’s the side say the full series identification?

I think you will be able to get away with the reel, it appears to have good line capacity storage which you will most definitely need on those long salmon runs or you will find yourself being spooled very quickly.

Browse the forum on casting rods I know there was a section I think it’s in the steelhead section under pier casting. I am currently using a Diawa 10.6 medium action rod as well as my Raven Matrix 12.9 doing double duty as casting and river fishing….
