I wanted to look at investing in a centerpin reel for the comming opener. My local bait shop is Selling the Okuma Aventa for $79.99, I know it retails for a hundred more than that. Is this reel worth the money. From what i understand it uses brushes instead of bearings but i can upgrade to bearings later? Is there a better centerpin to invest my money in?

Never fished the bushing model, but the bearing model is more expensive. I fished it for a few months, great starter reel. Some guys fish them for years without any issues. Not too sure if you can upgrade to bearings though.

sure you can upgrade it for about 35 bucks. bearings, and you need a spacer and o-ring. i dropped the bushing out by setting the spool on padded blocks just far enough apart for the bushing, and hitting the bushing with a dowel and drift hammer. wasnt sure if i would warp the spool, but she dropped no prob.

was that bills bait and tackle in hamilton? was there today and saw the same deal but I thought it was with bearings..

You didn't see a guy with an Amundson ball cap did you??

Get the vt1002 version with the bearings, worth the extra scratch, if you cab find a used okuma sheffield i would do that aswell, a lot smoother, and better lookin.

When I arrived it was pretty hectic, a lot of guys in ball caps

i was too focused on looking at all the reels, rods and deals they had to notice anybody I think, they really had some good deals

I wouldn't buy that reel, buy an Amundson or a Rapala Drifter as they are both better reels.
