hi i am new to the forum and am not going to come right out and ask for places to fish. i have been looking around the trentsevern waterways , the kawarthas , near erie and even out in kingston, and have researched a fair bit aswell. what i have found is that i just cant put my finger on where the fishing is good and not just popular if u know what i mean. i own a 16ft deep v boat with a 40 hp and a trolling motor so i feel i am well equipped i just do not know wher to start . does anyone have any suggestions of lakes or smaller bodies of water or even rivers where it has not been to pressured the, fishing is good if im doing what needs to be done bait,Colors, equipment etc. to relate with the day that i wont struggle to have fun catching plenty of large mouth allday if anyone could be as kind to help me i would GREATLY appreciate it . my son just got into fishing and im trying to get him hooked and land a few nice bass this summer :)

i would greatly appreciate once again if someone could help me i had another weekend out with no fish hoping this one will not be alike

I would advise you to pick a species to target for starters. Sounds like bass might be where you want to start.

Read up on bass. Things to look up: Feeding habits, food preferences, preferred habitat/structure, preferred water depth/temp for mid summer, etc.

Bass should be a very easy start. I catch bass from shore in the Kawarthas and surrounding communities. Often it's as simple as a bobber and a worm. Bass will also readily strike at spinners such as a Mepps.

You don't need special line, seasoned bass anglers may be targeting trophy bass in and around heavy and thick weeds, for which super heavy line is a must, but if you're just looking for 1-2lbers then any old line will do.

I like to use fairly large hooks for bass.

Northern leopard frogs are deadly for bass, I think you are allowed to have a dozen with you as bait.

It is a little unusual to ask for spots in this forum, specially in your first or second post. This is about sharing techniques/lures, and sometimes general water body names. If you own a boat, you must have a better chance than a shore angler like me. However, don't be dissapointed in going out and not catching many . This is the time you will appreciate later. Learning on your own. In my first year of fishing I drove several thousand kilometers in Ontario and caught less than 20 large fish (i.e. excluding panfish). Now I catch several in each outing but do appreciate the learning of the first year. The research I didby going out, reading on internet, and learning from just looking at how people do it, has give me so much confidence and a lot more knowledge than those who want to take the shortcut and end up with good fish, everytime, from the first day.

Tight line!

Well said, well said. Get yourself a copy of backroads mapbooks and research an area. Try to find lakes off the beaten path that have a launch. Or pick a more popular lake in an area and then check out other potential lakes before you go to the popular one.(then you'll find your own honey holes) Not many guys are going to give up their secret spots, even lake names on the internet can and will thrash small lake populations in no time. Like getin said, it will be much more rewarding to find your own spots, rather than someones telling you where to go.

salmonrutta- many believe that rope is needed to catch big bass out of thick cover, but i disagree...last week i caught a 19" largie out of the nastiest cover imaginable on a 4" jerkbait on 6lb test trilene big game. I also got 3 more over 3 lbs in the same day on that light line in some nasty lily pads and cabbage. But braided rope does definitely help for rookie anglers not used to fishing heavy cover.

OH yeah- all of the waterways are great fisheries. I have personally fished the trent alot, and quite a bit on erie and have had great success on both waterways. The kawarthas are well known as a spectacular fishery. Have no idea on the kingston area.

You definitely do have a leg up in fishing for LMB. The places you have access to fish is a grat place to start. It's hard to tell you "hotspots" because fish do move from one feeding spot to another.

I would suggest to look for lily pads and anywhere that offers fish some surface protection. Weeds are also another great area to fish in and again, it offers bass protection from other fish, but also allows them to ambush their prey.

Spend some time fishing over these areas and if they don't hit, move on and try a different area. No point in fishing an area where the fish are not aggressive.

Mepps, spinners, buzz bait, Rapalas, jigs, are some great lures to use.

Try tossing a spinner to locate some aggressive fish. Once you found them, switch to a slower presentation (jigs, senkos, drop shot, etc) and work out the area for the other fish.

There is a reason the spots you have already experienced are popular - lots of fish - you just have to keep trying. Learn the lakes - stick to 1 big lake and pound it - sooner or later you will figure it out. Every lake has a secret colour, lure etc.. that just makes it seem easy to fishing.

I would suggest fishing in the Burnt River if you can, Today in only an hour We caught 2 smallmouth one 2lb one 4lb and a 2lb Largemouth, Yesterday night we got a smallmouth around 6inches long.

Last week on a certain lake(glouchester pool) on the trent severn waterway close to georgian bay we caught over 3 dozen larger bass(16-19") and a dozen pike.(4lb average) Like Jim said there is a reason those popular lakes are popular! Ironically many of the waterways you listed are more popular for waterskiers and rec boaters than fisherman!

Im a new angler my self and just up to recently pretty much just fished pan fish but i went out in a peddal boat (lol i know) at my buddys cottage on balsam and found that just hit the the reeds am (6:30-9) caught 2 3lb LMB and a 2LB Rock Bass never seen one that big so i was pretty pumped. I think the key is pick a couple good lakes that r popular but not out of control popular, start with the basic techniques of trolling near structure find some online maps and just go different times as much as possible learn the lakes and after a couple years you will have some nice spots there and more comfortable going to other places. i dont have much experience with tackle but worm and bobber always work and i used mepps spinners black fury i think its called orange number 2 worked well and green aglia number 2

Not catching happens to me all the time, I have only caught one fish in 2 years, and that one was at a pond on a farm, that was loaded with bass, everyone else caught over 3, and the girl caught like 8 or 9, I used the same thing as the other 4, and I got nothing until I changed it up and I got the 2nd biggest of what was caught that day. I go out 2-3 a week if I can, so thats a lot of fishing with no fish, and I hit the same areas i try different lures and bait, diff techniques, just got to keep going and trying. Best of Luck!!
