Went out to the Oshawa pier last friday after work for a third attempt since the Tuesday had no luck at Port Hope. There was only four other fisherman out there and one boat strowlling up and down the channel.
Got there around 6:00 pm and it was very windy so I though it was a good sign and it might be the day to finally catch one.
About an hour later I see a fish jump out of the water and my heart races... oh boy! there is fish here.
Started casting far as I could and there it is another fish jumps out of the water could clearly see it was a huge one.
Casting at the end of the pier and still no action. Few minutes later they start jumping again inside the channel in the middle of the pier.
I moved to the middle and it begins again one jump, follow by a second and a third. One jumped just 10 feet from me... felt tempted to jump in the water and catch by hand...lol

Nigh fall and you can stll hear them jumping, but they were simply not biting.
Got frustrated late at night and decided to leave.

The fishes had a mind of their own and were only there to tease all the fisherman...lol

*May be its time to put away the thongs and try a different technique...lol (Blair)

Could any one explain why there were so many fish out there that day and not a single bite.

Could be carp surfacing if they were really big. Other species surface too. Might not have been salmon.

There's a good chance those are salmon that are staging, but I'll just leave it at that

Love fishing oshawa once the fish have moved up stream. Any sign of fish beyond the mouth yet? Being from Waterloo its a far drive but worth it

yeah I'm assuming if one jumped 10 ft away that you got a positive salmonid ident ie "big silver bastid"...what were you using? was anybody else getting into fish? crankbaits, plugs, spoons and spinners can be good when they are rolling...team fishing is good, 3 guys using 3 different presentations until we find what they are keyed in on is something me and my buddies do...try something for a while, if that don't work, change it...I usually go out on the pier with two rods...a lure rod and one for bottom bouncing...set off bottom for a while...get bored and bring that in and throw a lure around some, or if they're rollin on top...if nothin on that lure after covering lots of water, change lures, talk to guys, see what they're using, what produces for them...fish hard, fish more..I've got a big vest full of all kinds of fish catching tricks, all will work some of the time, none works all the time...you'd be surprised how many fish can be in a small hole inland and not bite or bump a line, let alone big lake waters like Port Hope4fish...

Thanks for the advice.. I was only using spoons and cleos, will try switching to crankbaits and plugs and see how it goes. I am usully on my own fishing, but will bring two rods next time....

I'm pretty sure I know the spot on the pier you were at, there's a trench out there and a hump they tend to sit on and sometimes they run right along the pier at your feet. Advantages to using two rods include less rigging/more time in the water, losing less line on rerigging and quickly using multiple presentations. Having a good clip on the lure rod allows you to quickly change lures. For your bottom bouncer, tie a #6 to #10 salmon egg or octopus hook with a foot and a half to a little more than 2 feet tag, put that back thru the eye and tie 1/2oz to 1oz bell sinker to it, sometimes I hit them as low as 8 inches off bottom and scale down to 1/4oz or for shallower/smaller waters. Large roe bag is best, sometimes with yarn in fish catching same or contrasting colours...funky baits can be deadly sometimes like chunks of blue yarn with 1 or 2 green Jensen egg. even dollars store pom-poms...throw that rig out there, tighten the line and hold the rod and line in a finger to feel the hit, nuthin feels like a salmon smacking that...you can use a glow stick or light taped to the end of the rod and set it down in a rod holder or propped on a chair...be right beside it ready to grab it...nooks are renown for taking rods into the water and a buddy of mine almost lost his down there this year

Will see how it goes today after the rain fall from yeterday... Not sure what you mean by the yarn and pom-poms...lol
Thanks again,..

just regular yarn from the dollar store in colours that match roe colours, orange, yellow, pink, peach, cream etc, something that's a string of little loops is what you're looking for, 1000+ single egg patterns for a buck, brighter is better for night/deep water, light colour for clear, shallower water... sometimes fish want blue, purple can work too, if you find stuff with Crystal flash tied in, it's aces...a ball of yarn is called a skein. Coincidence? I think not  same idea for pom-poms...they're just little balls of material for crafts...

I always used a big rattling plug for staging salmon

A BIG ORANGE STORM WIGGLEWART IS KILLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

..... give 'er a rip and report back

The largest "wiggle wart" I could find was 2" is that big enough for a salmon?

NO!!!!!!! :D

They make a 3 and a 4 incher..... they inhale the 2, not good, the big boys make a big noise!

I retrieve it like I'm using a rattling plug for Walleye up north, steady but not fast.... only these "Walleye" are 20 lbs + !!!! :D

+1...they do make it at that size. I was at le baron yesterday and saw 3incher but didn't see a 4incher. man do they have big jointed lures there. fish jumping could be anything. i see carp jump at dusk.

@GBD yes...@Dugger got a rattlin rap in Alewife colour with dot this year...only got to use it twice yet though...I expect it to produce a fish next trip out

The yarn and the pom-poms balls, must very interesting concept will try it sometime... will keep an eye open for those 3" or 4" wigglers.

With some persistence yesterday at the pier was finally able to snag one and fight for about 15 min ,but it got the best of me and I lost it.
Hooked another an hour later (female 35") oh boy! what a rush the zzzzzzzz sound get you so pumped up.

Happy to say no longer a salmon vergin...lol

Post it in the salmon competition here
http://www.ontariofishingforums.com/forum/topic/16505-fall-salmon-and-trout-competition-2012/

just 0.5" short of taking first place...stiff competition so far lol

Glad you got your first salmon...congrats! ...off bottom or on the lure? The idea with the yarn is to match roe in clear water and add colour for them to key in on in coloured water...dunno why they like blue but they do...one year many moons ago a buddy of mine was smashing them with floating blue foam chunks off bottom...
