NEED ADVICE ON PICKING A TROLLING MOTOR FOR MY CANOE. I HAVE A 15 FOOT COLEMAN CANOE,AND I DONT KNOW WHICH LENGTH SHAFT IS APPROPRIATE.THE GUY AT BASS PRO WAS NOT ANY HELP. ALSO AS WELL AS SHAFT LENGHT IS THERE SUCH THING AS TOO POWERFULL? I'VE SEEN A CANOE WITH THE MOTOR MOUNTED OFF THE SIDE WITH PLYWOOD AS A BRACE, IS THIS SAFE? THOSE MOTOR MOUNT BRACKETS THEY SELL SEEM PRICY.

Hmm... this is an interesting question and topic. I'm considering a canoe later this year, so it'd be great if anyone with advice or insight can chime in.

my buddy had one for a few years. I never went fishing with him but i remember it wasnt a very powerful motor. also the shaft doesnt need to be extremely long. Back to power if you get a very powerful trolling motor it would also overkill because chances are you wont be out in canoe when its rough out.

Any motor that would have 30-40lb of thrust would be fine, get you going at a good paddling pace. You do need to have a good mount and depending on the canoe, a mountable keel, like a fin or dagger board mounted around the mid section of the boat, to stop it from drifting sideways.

Hope this helps and good luck.
