pier fishing reel

Hi there, was wondering what you all would buy if you had to get a high line capacity pier fishing reel for salmon/trout without going much over $200? Looking for something tough that can take a bit of a beating out there on the rocks :lol:

lol if u want looks. Quantum Energy has it all, but I don't know anything that can take a beating on rocks :lol:

i just got a shimano symetre 3000, great reel and enough line capacity for salmon. I dont think it will cost more than 120 or 130.

If its just for salmon and trout pier fishing then i would say go for the 4000 but the 3000 is good for me because its not too big and heavy.

i would agree on the 2500 for trout but for salmon if you want to use heavier line the 3000 has a bit more line capacity for both the daiwa and the shimano. I was choosing between a daiwa and the shimano symetre when i was buying my reel, i cant remember the model. It was a close call i could have went either way.

for trout i woud go for 2000 you may be right 3000 is best for salmon but depend on the rod too. I used Daiwa Fuego 2000 and 13' St crox rod and it work fine for salmon

If you go to BassPro shop and talk to them they'll guide you. I got my salmon gear (rod, reel, line, etc) for ~200, lo and behold the day after I caught my first salmon :lol my reel capacity is 8/240

Thanks for the suggestion, I'm guessing you're talking about the TDA3500A specifically?

I've never used Daiwa before, but heard good things...

This is actually to replace a busted Shimano Sedona. I had always had good experience with Shimano in the past and still have a couple Stradics for bass/walleye.

A baitcaster would be an interesting thought actually, I know you could probably cast further with this. However, I just can't imagine myself trying to untangle a birdsnest at night out on the pier, would be really frustrating. Also, aren't most casting rods 1 piece? I can't fit a 1 piece rod in my car.

I do have a 6'6", 2 piece casting rod but that wouldnt cut it for pier fishing...

It's a lot more fun when you get the hang of it (by loosing several spool of line :lol. Not very good for light baits (worms, etc) though

No, you can get 2 piece casting (trigger) rods.

Light tackle with my Scorpion XT1000 is the only way to go. Wacky rigged senkos cannot be beat. Say 3/8oz and under outcast my spinning combos.
