I am fairly new to pike fishing, only caught my first one last year! And I caught it in late July and beginning of August by trolling a Rapala X-Rap. I have just booked a camping trip for the last weekend in May at Six Mile Lake Provincial park! I also have caught a pike there last year casting a Mepps. Is there anything different on how to approach pike in late May or should I troll and cast just like I have been? Thanks for any replies :)

Six Mile Lake is probably the best place to catch Pike in Ontario because of the mass amount of them in that lake. Find weedy spots from 6-10 FOW.

I just cast with a semi fast retrieve, I find I get more casting then trolling. I've had really good luck with Mepps Syclopses on that lake, a Glow/Pink Mepps Syclops to be exact but they all work great, Blue Fox spinners with the built in bells are great too. One more great lure is a buzz bait, Pike hate them and whenever they see or hear them they strike. And for Six Mile Lake don't stay at one spot too long, there are tons of areas for Pike, don't waste your time on just one.

Good Luck.

thanks for the reply! sounds like i have been doing the right thing when i cast by not retrieving too fast. and will keep in mind the casting instead of trolling idea too! i have a couple of syclops' as well of a few different buzz baits that i will try too! i have used them before with no luck so just gotta keep tossing em out there i guess! hopefully i can pull in a few nice ones and report back here with some pictures :)

rapala husky jerks and mepps 5 spinners work well in cold water conditions too, pike should still be in the shallows

Since you have the option to troll. Deep diving plugs works best for bigger pike. If you've heard of the smithwick super rogue float or suspending...time to put your raps back in the tackle box. This is handsdown the best plug I have owned for after-spawn pike. Firetiger. You will be hauling in big pike in no time. troll deep...troll moderate to slow. If you're casting from shore #4 - #5 spinners or suspending plugs. This is the time to use the big pike lures. Dont forget to use a wire leader if you're using spinners.

Just posted a question about Spring Walleye. Spring Pike I know a little more about.

Especially with this cold weather you might be able to sight fish pike in the shallows. They will be sunning at various times during the day. Look for protected shallow bays near deeper water. Nothing better then pulling in to a bay and spotting your fish. Gold coloured husky jerk with a twitch twitch pause is killer. If it is still cold in late may you could twitch twitch and pause for 10-15 seconds before the big boys will trigger.
If you can't sight fish then the above post is all very productive.

Thanks for all the replies! Can't wait to get out there!! Will deffinately take these tips to the water :)
