Im new to pining but not to flat fishing i use to use a drag reel and want to try a pin reel can any one point me in the right direction? im not looking to drop 500$ on a reel but dont want a pos either, plus if you have any casting tips and what to use for main line and what to use for a leader that would be helpful too

Welcome to the addiction, check out the post "float fishing line" and for casting, I recommend raventackle.com they have some good videos and very informative instructions on our sport. For a reel, you're going to here a thousand different things. Go big or go home, or go cheaper and deal with people telling you you're reel is not good, lol. I think a lot of us novices start with the Okuma vt1002 or the Raven matrix, both reels are going to run you close to 200$ and when you think about it, for a "cheap" centerpin, it's not really that cheap. I am currently running the Okuma and love it, but all I have to compare it to is my buddies kingpin, which i also loved.

Btw, has anyone checked out rapala's centerpin? Or maybe it was berkely??

I,m also running the Okuma vt1002,second year and running like new.Excellent choice for a newbie and well made as was said for a great price.

yeah your right. Its part of their r-type lineup http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szrEmSKa3fY

There is a rapala pin and rod combo on kijiji for 175 right now, I cant speak for how good they are though, never used one but it seems like a good price if the outfit is in good condition.

I am also running a 1002 from aventa, I compared my Aventa to Trini Boys Raw II and its the same reel, spools interchange and so does everything else. Both are good reels, while I was there he also showed me his Raven Classic, and I gotta say that thing was smooth, spun much better than the Okumas.

One of these days I will get myself a nice kingping but really thats just because I love my toys and they look nice, the Aventa does the job, I like it and dont really care what a few snobs may think. The equipment doesnt make me impressed with a person, catching monster steel does :D

Hi Guys,
I am a noob as well. Done lots of fishing but never centerpin. I picked up a Amundson Steelhead tracker and 13' rod combo at the sportsman show a couple weeks back. I have not been able to use it yet so I can’t tell you how good it is, not sure if I would even know. It has some great reviews though. Any tips to where I could go this weekend would be appreciated. I am in the Waterloo area.

Do some research and buy within your means. If you have enjoyed float fishing and now wish to experience it through a CP, I would highly recommend buying something within the middle of the pack.
-Or as mentioned.. wait and see if any high end CP's pop up for sale.. It would be well worth the wait.

GL!
PS. I will be creating a post regarding my recent rod customizations.. It may benefit you as my builder could probably set you up with a decent custom rod.. (You seem like a modder.. lol)

I just checked it out, rapala has one, it's a centerpin mooching reel.
I run the rapala type r and it's deffinately not a mooching reel. For a starter reel if you will it's a great reel I love it and the tolerances are great. Spins phenomenal. Would recommend for those starting out.

That sucks but it was listed for half of retail so I am not surprised. Good luck and keep your eye out. If you use ontario.kijiji.ca it will search all over ontario, I have had the best results by typing in "float reel"
