Yesterday I went to port d for some salmon fishing. I was fishing from 4:30pm-10:30pm. I started on the end of the peir with a spoon and worked my way back to the parking lot. Halfway back a brown took my spoon and tore off 30 yards of line. I was reeling it in and my 10 lb mono started making a squeaking noise. 30 seconds later my line snapped. I then headed to the walking bridge behind the factory. I continued casting my spoon. The salmon were jumping everywhere! I saw 3 guys reel in some 15 pounders. I got 5 bites that hit like a freight train but each time they spit the hook after about 25 secs. I then packed it up for the day and headed home. I was abit sad about my skunking. I will be going back there tommorow and will be bringing lots of roe and will try the other side. I am feeling lucky!

Thanks for the Update, I may be hitting PORT D on Sunday Eve.

Got the DON RIVER cleanup in the morning.

* Make sure your Trebles are super sharp!

It is not uncommon to "lose" them while fighting, but by the sounds of it ... I would double check yours.

Mustad Ultra Point Trebles are a good Price Point and Decent

Get 11 of them for $5 - 6 bucks.

GOOD LUCK!

ps: I will be specifically hoping for BROWNS. Port D is a great place to hook into those beauties...

.... like Bair stated, get a hook sharpener! Big time!

thanks Catfish... good ole Port D!!!!

good lord I was raised since birth at that factory... oh the memories!!!!!!!

Catfish, get that camera ready and send us some pics of some nice browns and salmon sunday!

good luck!

I then headed to the walking bridge behind the factory. Cat

Fishing on the Bridge is a $250 fine. Lucky you did not get caught. The CO are always there during this time fo the year. Though others were fishing there, they will eventually get caught.

Lots of fish at POrt D due to good current, high oxygen content, thousands of minnows, and no where else for fish to go. However, very snaggable bottom. if you can avoid it. One reason you need cheaper tackle to get the fish, anything moving too fast and close to the suface means skunk days. Took me years to master the area and lost tackle, Bottom bouncing is best down there so when we lose our setup , it will not hurt our pocket too much.

Most fish are close to the bottom especially trouts, less energy needed to fight the stronger current at the surface. Fishing on moving current is way more difficult than just fishing on still water. We need to feel and take some risk to understand how our lure will dive close to the bottom without getting snag. Best way to learn is to get snag, then we know how many seconds we need to wait before retreiving our lure. If we notice the current is moving our lure way too fast, we are not using the right tackle. Fish are not always hungry due to lot of baitfish around, they do strike due to their predatory instinct or having an easy meal that they do not have to swim hard to get.

Aside from using spoon lure, 3/4 oz jighead with grub is one of my favorite lure down there. Regardless of experience, I am still prepared to lose tackle just to get the fish.

By the way, i was under the bridge, not on it. I do have a hook file and have used it a couple of times but the last time i used it i was watching tv and the show got good and the next time i looked at the hook there was nothing left of it LOL. Am i sharpening hooks right? I have a diamond edge hook file and i just run it down the sides of the hooks. Is that the right way?
