Well, for all of you who were talking about the salmon run, there you go!!! :)

Re: get your fishing rods ready port hope is on now

ehehe thanks buddy im excited I want to catch a big ass salmon this year ahah

Re: get your fishing rods ready port hope is on now

Must be a recent development. I was there on Saturday and there was no sign of salmon. Thanks for letting us know.

Cheers

Re: get your fishing rods ready port hope is on now

Sounds like you were there 1 day too early!

Re: get your fishing rods ready port hope is on now

I can not wait to catch me my first salmon. But I think I'll need a new rod because I'm not sure my bass/wally rod could handle the fight of a salmon

Re: get your fishing rods ready port hope is on now

What if hes not chucking lures? would he be using bait? and what would happen?

If he's chucking lures, he'll be hooking the fish in the mouth. You can land a salmon on bass gear if the fish is hooked in this fashion...

If he's still fishing, then he'll most likely be "lining" the fish, which often results in foul hooked fish (big old treble hooked into a fin or tail) which are very difficult to control and almost impossible to land with bass gear.

edit to add * I assume he was referring to the above... either that or he was saying that you can easily chuck heavy spoons with bass gear. :)

Re: get your fishing rods ready port hope is on now

No problem at all, I don't have enough money for trolling rods and caught giant lakers on 6lb test. Also float fished one time without a float rod and hooked a Salmon at Erindale also on 6lb test, but lost it. Whether it took the marabou jig under the float on purpose or not remains a mystery cuz I was fishing it just off the bottom.....

If you were using a regular non-float rod ie "bass rod" with 6 lb test in Erindale Park I can easily see you losing that fish. :)

I personally know for a fact that what the OP said is 100% true. Does that mean that you'll have the same results on Sunday? Not necessarily. There are never any guarantees, especially in this sport. How many times have you heard "Oh, you should have been here yesterday, we were catching 'em like crazy!"

But yeah, the OP is accurate.

401 to Toronto Rd or the next exit Ontario St. There will be a big Port Hope sign, you can't miss it.

Re: get your fishing rods ready port hope is on now

Planning on going tonight... and hope to land one with 6'6'' med action rod with an 8 lb test using roe. Will update tomorrow morning (hopefully with a pic!!).

Re: get your fishing rods ready port hope is on now

Some early fish this year.

Maybe I'll try them on the fly this fall.

Re: get your fishing rods ready port hope is on now

What other kinds of fish can be found at the mouth of the Ganaraska River besides salmon or trout species?

Re: get your fishing rods ready port hope is on now

lol you can use spinners or certain crankbaits to catch salmon and trout, I caught my first steelhead using a yellow spinner and if it wasn't for my sister forcing me I would be a total salmon newb cuz I was very intimidated, but caught my first one on my first outing in early october? at the mouth of the credit, they were jumping 20 feet from shore, but realized if I wanted to increase my chances I should go trolling. Salmon are not any harder to catch than a 3lb bass. Peaceout!!!!

Why would you want to fish for anything else there? :)

Truth be told, I'm not exactly sure because I have never fished there for anything else - but I would dare to speculate that you would find a variety of species such as fresh water drum, bass, pike, catfish, carp, anything really (maybe not walleye) would be my guess... But this is a world class salmonid fishery, as such trout and salmon are the main attraction, and rightfully so.
