Planning on going tonight... and hope to land one with 6'6'' med action rod with an 8 lb test using roe. Will update tomorrow morning (hopefully with a pic!!).

So, did you go?

yes I did. Spent all night there. Around 100 people there. 11 hrs and I did not see anyone get a single bite, let alone catch one. Still early IMO.

Re: get your fishing rods ready port hope is on now

I'll be fishing my first salmon ever with my family. Could anyone direct me where in Port Hope or Bowmanville we can go fishing then? A GPS coordinates would be more helpful and any basic tips are most welcome. I'm a newbie. Thanks.

Its positive guys the salmon run in Port hope is on I went last night with my cousin and uncle. We went around 9 pm and the place was pack with like 50 ppl. Dang we hook into salmon after salmon my cousin hook into four salmon but lost all of them i hook 2 salmon and lost one of them but manage to reel the other one It is a male coho wow first time I caught a coho. Weird thing is were getting bites every 20 to 30 min but then when it started raining they just stop bitting I guest they start moving up the river and dont want to eat anymore. My friends and I were actually there from 5 to 10am on Sunday and they were hitting one after another in the rain chucking cleos at the mouth. Non stop rain for about 5 hrs. Love the feeling of a chinny taking a cleo.

Landed a few and lost most. Once they would jump the cleos would go flying. Fun morning. They are all over the place. Are arms were sore from chucking spoons all morning so we went to a few other locations and float fished and they were hitting every where.

We were watching groups of fish coming upstream every hour or so. First time I've ever seen anything like that.

Very Nice!

Little cleo iz very nice & effective . One thing to keep in mind - always sharpen those treble hooks bit more ; when you feel bite , make sure you set a hook properly this way more salmon will stay on then off the hook

Better yet, remove the trebles, and put siwash hooks on those cleos. :)

Re: get your fishing rods ready port hope is on now

Too bad you can't eat the salmonid fishes caught here. According to the Ontario consumption guide the salmonid fishes caught here have probably the strictest consumption amounts anywhere in southern Ontario:

http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/publications/590b14-SO.pdf

Scroll down and check the Ganaraska River section. I think Rainbow Trout is the safest you can consume under a certain size limit (4 servings per month).

Re: get your fishing rods ready port hope is on now

Does everyone keep the salmon caught there or do some catch and release???

I don't know if I would eat a salmon from there!!!

Re: get your fishing rods ready port hope is on now

Pure catch and release for me.
I'll only keep a hen for either roe or skein.
Then the fish goes to a neighbour or something (Greek neighbours) They'll eat anything! LOL :)

Re: get your fishing rods ready port hope is on now

Last spring I saw what looked like a left over salmon from the fall at wilmot creek. It was black and moldy lol. The last brown male I ate tasted good, but I can't imagine eating a black one. BLEH
