Private Property?

If I were to manage to park my car, say on 16 mile creek or bronte creek upstream (north of 5) does anyone actually own the forested or uncultivated areas or am I going to get yelled at for walking around there on the bank.

In 99.8% of southern Ontario rivers/creeks you cannot just walk across forested land to access it. This is why you see people accessing the water from a bridge. Check out some crown land maps to see just how little crown land there actually is down here.

The way trespassing works is if it is signed or fenced you cannot access, but if nothing you can access, until you are informed that you are trespassing you must leave

Ummm.......are you for real?......its people like you that ruin it for everyone...it's your responsibility to find out if the land is private not the landowners job to inform you......

Nado...your link is from british columbia...not exactly same in ontario....Stupid law amyway... i could easily walk by a no trespassing sign and say I didn't see it, respectful people with much common sense would do homework and get proper permission to access.

You would be left with very few fishing spots and access points if you research every spot and only fish public property. You are fine if you respect fencing and posted signs.

Well i apologize. I was not familiar with the trespassing act. I am not from ontario originally and I should have looked before talking but still I think thats completely ridiculous. If I buy land and catch someone on it with or without signs I would be very upset

It's not a big deal, if you live on hunting or fishing grounds and don't want people trespassing you either put up a fence or post a sign. There is so little public access left we would have very few opportunities to fish if it wasn't this way.

In fact there are some parts of the world that have an even better stance on the issue, if you own land on a waterbody you are legally required to allow access. Conversely, here in Ontario there are countless rivers that are completely off limits to the public because they are on private property.

If anyone is reading this from Ontario do some research on Navigable Waters. It seems clear until you get into wading through the river instead of navigating it with a vessel (canoe etc) because some creek/riverbeds are in fact private. You need to be careful if you are unfamiliar with the area. Access from bridges is legal however if you wade on either side it may not be.

Matt for the most part property owners are aware if people are fishing their property and sign it well if they dont want people in there. I leave no trace and clean up after others so i think i keep the accessible spots open, not ruin it for everyone...

Ya dont blast through farmer's fields. That is their livelihood. That should be common sense, but thats something lacking these days

I own property in Bancroft on a lake with no public access, I have absolutely no issue with people using it to fish off shore, just respect it. No garbage and it's all good.
