Purchased an islander

Recently purchased an islander steelheader. I'm looking for recommendations for a rod to pair it with. What are you guys using?

What size of water do you intend to fish ie cred , Humber, saugeen , grand, niagara. ?? And do you want a universal rod for salmon and trout or just salmon or trout?

My personal go to rod is a 13.6 raven im6 but it's pretty light to be holding back big chinooks though I have gotten some decent chinooks buy the fish were exhausted beyond reviving .. If you want an all around starter rod I would suggest a streamside 12-13'

I have an okuma guide select (currently out of commission) and it can bend farther than anything I've seen, holds big salmon just fine and you still get a nice fight out of the trout. (it's a 13'6" BTW)

The streamside im8 are under 120$ And the strongest blanks I've ever seen !! I have the 17' and I can break 12lb by just leaning in to it and I'd be afraid to do that with any other of my rods

Thanks for the replies. It's not my first centrepin but an upgrade from the one I'm currently using. I have a 13' rapala r type rod at the moment and will keep that set up as a spare for buddies to use if they want to get out.

I'm gonna check out the stream side rods. I've heard good things. Thanks w_boughner.

The streams I fish are all the east tribs. However I'll be moving soon so the credit will likely be my new stomping grounds. And I'm not too concerned with a rod holding up to a big salmon as I don't like fishing for them. I basically only fish for steelhead.

Those streamsides sound kind of heavy for steel. Maybe try a raven im8 or im6.

They are soft tips with a strong back bone and they are fine for steal

The fact that you were breaking 12 lb leaders isnt a good thing

Well it puts confidence that I can really lean in to a fish with heavy leader and not have to worry about the rod breaking !!!! But it's still soft enough to use 4 lb lead

best rod for putting anything into the fish, raven im8. i can land salmon on it like creek chub with 10lb line. and soft enough that you can land big trout easily on 4.5 leader without compromising the backbone. I am selling my raven im8 13', planning to buy the raven rpx, for same backbone, even better hook set which amazes me, fraction of the weight and fasteset response time. but very heavy on the pocket at 600 bucks plus tax.
