Im sitting here tieing up some quick strike rigs for pike fishing tomorrow and I thought i would share with everyone how I go about making them. I find they work amazing for pike of all sizes when using larger minnows as bait. I use 12 pound big game mono to tie the rigs. I like to add weights in the middle to keep my dead minnow where i want it in the water column. These rigs are called quick strike for a reason, when u see that rod go STRIKE set that hook! When the fish hits youve got a good chance its got one of the trebles in its mouth, sometimes 2, so dont waste any time when using this rig, when using other rigs like smaller minnows on a jighead i like to give the fish a little more time to take the bait. Ill post pics tomorrow of how i hook the minnows up.

Let us know how you do with those. I'll be tying a few myself for the weekend. I've never actually tied one before, but I'm willing to give it a shot because I heard it works well with large pike. The old jig head just doesn't suffice sometimes.

will doo! They even work on small hammer handle pike. Smallest pike ive caught on this rig is about 2 pound! haha

Thanks for sharing. Never heard/seen a quick strike rig before. How would you fish this, just let it sit on the bottom or jig it?

Just let it suspend near bottom tipped with 2 minnows or 1 big minnow. You can buy them pre tied but they are easy to make for way cheaper!

its more of an ice fishing rig meant for dead sticking big dead minnows just off bottom. Im sure if you were fishing minnows under a float in the summer for pike and big bass this rig would work great too

So where does your main line connect? In the middle so your minnow is horizontal in the water or does it matter? Why wouldn't that work for Lakers with a dead herring?

i connect it to the eye of the treble and it will stay horizontal usually, not that a big dumb pike cares haha Id imagine it would work for lakers too unless they would be "hook shy" ? Im not sure im a laker newb lol

I was out last week for pike on tip ups. I really like quick strikes for pike but I make mine will steel leaders. You get into a mid 30" pike with 12lbs line as leader material and you are going to get bite offs like crazy. just my 2 cents

Btw, when I was out I landed 2 pike in the mid to high 20's and missed another 7 flags. The fish were hitting but I just couldn't get them with the hooks in there mouths. BAit being used was 7-10" herring.

ill use braid if im anticipating big fish but the lake I was on is a hammer handle factory we run 8 pound mainline and almost never snap off. you might not be getting a strong enough hook set. Ive never used tip ups so im not sure but we set the poop outa the hook when they hit and they usually get stung pretty good lol

I like the idea of a tip up but have lost a few fish with them over the years. To say I am not a tip up pro would be an understatement
