Bass usually spawn in the shallows of lakes & ponds rather than running the rivers.
They like muddy weed beds in about 3ft-10 ft depth.

Bass also "Hang around" are very territorial of their nest. (Both male & female)

Two weeks ago I caught a rainbow with a mepps aglia, which I cast five feet off the shoreline in about six feet of water. It made me think, are the trout a] simply cruising the shoreline for food while the water is still cold or, B] feeding off nesting bass?

This is what sparked my interest in this thread. In a lake with both small mouth and rainbows, I would guess you could use artificial bass eggs? Not even sure if you could buy those! Any experience here?
