I caught two rainbows today and they look pretty much the same both males but one had orange good looking meat while the other one had white looking meat not orange at all, What's the reason for this? ,Is the white meat bad and shouldn't eat it ?

I've never heard a complete answer on this.

Some say diet of the fish, some say stocked vs wild, fresh run vs. been in the river longer.

Did the longer one have the white meat? I don't see how age of the fish could be the factor but can't rule that out either.

Have heard the hatchery fish are more often white but become oranger the longer they are in the wild.
I believe the answer is diet.
My personnal fav, Brookies are always wild where I get them and always orange or pink. I am sure this is because fresh water Shrimp make up a large part of their diet. In stocked ponds they are often white.
Orange tastes way better :)

Alfie.

pretty much comes down to diet, we see it at the shop with different beef. 100% grass fed beef has a different colour than grass/grain fed beef, and the fat layer has a different colour on beef that has been fed a diet of potatoes.

I thought it only happened to chinnys but I guess wrong.

Last fall my buddy caught a chinny. When it was time for him to fillet it, he noticed yellow spots all over the white meat.. It's something he never seen before so he discarded it.

pump, that sounds like worms bro... very common in the warmer months... it was a good choice to take meat in the colder weather

So the white meat is safe to eat ? ,It's not gone bad like Chinooks do ?
Rainbows are not on their way to die when they are running, unlike Pacific salmon.

oh ya... all fish can get parasitic worms man... warmer waters bring em in... enjoy your bass/pike! yummers!

If your going to eat steel.
Fall the best time.
Firm fresh cold water caught.
Key being.
Not in spawning mode.

I don't know about rainbows but I do know about specks: When they are well fed they are fat and pink, when they are not they are white and slinky(and the flesh has a watery texture as opposed to the firmer texture of pink ones). The same applies to browns, so I would assume the same applies to rainbows.

How come not in spawning mode ?
Firstly you don't want to be killing any ripe hens.
Spawned out fish beat up exhausted and burned most of their fat off .
Personally I think that effects the taste
And no fish in the microwave at work.

From my understanding its based on diet. Fish eaters will have whiter meat than insectivores or something like that. When you purchase salmon from farms you can choose which shade of pink you want to have and they adjust the amount of carotene ( I think? ) within the diet to achieve those results. The SalmoFan...
