Record Fish

The chances are slim to none, but if I do catch a fish that could be a Ontario or Canadian record fish what is the process that you have to follow. Im strickly catch and release so Im thinking taking a picture measuring length and width. What do you think?

Muskies Canada sems to be the Leading Authority for all Measuring etc.

They also have a PILE of Links on their Site if they don't have Exactly what you are looking for.

I can probably assisit you in locating Their Web Site. Their should also be a LOT of other Muskie Sites at that Location.

Perhaps "Bookmarking" a few of them would come in Handy.

In the meantime the Chart Below should be of Help in your "Measurement & Weight" Calculations Quest.

There are different organizations depending on the area and catch.

I think the vast majority require certified weighing with witnesses of said organization or CO's.

I could be totally wrong here, cause I'm not really concerned about catching any records, lol. If I was though, I'd have adequate storage for said fish with alot of ice

Most often you will have to keep the fish. There are certain fish that you can release...for those fish you need to buy a certified IGFA (International Gamefish Association) measuring device. If you keep the fish then you have to weight it at an approved weight scale. You should be able to check where the approved scales are at the IGFA website. http://igfa.org/Fish/All-Tackle-Length-Rules.aspx Here are the requirements for a catch and release record. Note that all catch and release records are based on only length!

Only Length? Sounds NOT all to accurate to me. GIRTH is a Major Factor in the Weight of ANY Fish!

Closer to Home the "Ontario Federation Of Anglers & Hunters" has This to say (As Below)

I would also Pay Attention to "Muskies Canada" Rules and Regulations.

I cropped the bottom part off for better Viewng. It mentions Ken O'Brien as the CANADIAN Record Holder, Now The World Record Holder.Also The CANADIAN Live Release Record Holder.

There was also a LONG and Large Battle for the Present WORLD Muskie Title. (Below)

The NPAA "National Professional Anglers Association" was the Governing Body that made the Final Decision to Award Toronto's Ken O'brien with the WORLD TITLE.

The IGFA had nothing to do with it.

Get that fish weighed as quick as possible, by the right people. I don't know exactly where and who but most importantly is to get that fish stored properly like manitou mentioned and get it to the right people fast. The world record for brook trout was set way back when... because it took the guy a long time to get back and have the fish weighed / certified, it dried out ( lost some weight due to water loss I'm guessing ) and came in at 14 lbs... its initial measurements placed the fish in the 20 lb range... if your fish dries out, best thing to do is rehydrate that sucker :lol:

Yes This Post, is only about Muskies but I'm sure it's the same with some other types of fish.

I DID have a READ of the Link you Posted.and my reply to that and the Theory that LENGTH is the ONLY Determing Factor is as above.

The Poster also refers to an Ontario and/or Canadian Record. Therefore, My reference to and Attachments relating to.... "Muskies Canada" and the "Canadian Association Of Anglers & Hunters"

Perhaps it wasn't you. In any event I went on the prowl last week for some Muskie/Pike/Big Bass Topwaters and found a BUNCH!!

The Jitterbug and the others all came from US Sites.

I keep a Wooden 12" Ruler beside my Computer. "SAY WHAT? A 6" Jitterbug? What the Hell do I use to Cast that thing!!"

The Largest Bass Pro has is 3" for the Regular one and 3-1/2" for the Jointed One.

Then we have a "Storm" "Thunder Beast" OR! A "Storm" "Giant ThunderStick Madflash"!!! :blink:

Have a look at Them Below. I just ReBuilt my 15 Year Old "Penn Peer 209M" on a Major Glass Trolling Rod, also 15 years old. (Also Below).
Have yet to Spool it. ....50Lb Fireline/Spider Wire?

Yea no worries, and thanks for posting those links. That rod is yours? Man that is an absolutely beautiful looking setup you got there. Would look great even mounted on a wall/above a fire place!... or with a huge fish tugging on the other end :wink:

Last time I used that Rod & Reel was on Charleston Lake, North of Kingston for Deep Lakers, 200 feet of water.. No Downriggers then just 100's of feet of line, Weight, Willow Leaf "Christmas Tree" Spinners. and BIG Williams Wabblers.

You also Prayed that you didn't pick up any Junk or a Snag. If so it was REEL IN, REEL IN, SCREAM! LINE BACK OUT!! We got a few Beauties though!! So. It's worth the Effort I guess.

It's pointing to a "Williams Wabler" The one we use to use for Lakers. Except that one is only 4". We use to use a 6" one. It a Very Old "Classic Lure".

Apparently they are no longer available in the 6" Model.

I also use the 2-5/8" Silver one for Pike. Usually in "Tall Weeds" not the "Mushy Stuff". Lot of Nice Movement with it. I get a LOT of Pike with that one.

All of my "Wablers" have a Glass Rattle Epoxied to the Back Side.

If that doesn't work I go to a "Red & White Daredevil", but it doesn't produce like the "Wabler" does.

CTC has a "Kit" of 4 four of the "Classic" ones for $15.99 Not a bad price as thay usually sell for about $6.50 Each. (Below)
