A friend of mine is looking for a reel with a gear ratio of (or close to) 4.2:1 for pulling big blades for musky. I use a 7000 as it was passed down to me years ago and works great. The problem for him is that its too big and heavy.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks guys,
MTM

Hey MTM,

For my musky exploits I use the good ol' tried tested and true Abu Garcia 6500 C3, a great all around reel. Gear ratio 5:3:1, but have no problem burning double10s and tossing heavy believers. I love the "clicker" function for trolling. Not expensive at all; aprox. $130 brand spanking new and it will last a lifetime. It's a rounder but fits nicely in your hand.

I can also recommend the Shimano Curado 300E, gear ratio 6:2:1. A little more expensive, but it will serve your friend well, low pro. The Chronarch's are nice too.

Good luck in your search,

If you are looking for a round baitcaster you can go for a Shimano Calcutta or the TE model. They have models available in a 4.7:1 ratio.

If money is an issue you can opt for the cheaper Shimano Cardiff or Corvalus models. 5.2:1 ratio. Much cheaper.
