Hate to be the one asking this but.. I'm planning on renting a boat on Sunday. I don't fish from a boat so it's a new thing for me and need your help.

I was thinking lake simcoe. Smallies look tempting from there. Anyone willing to share general area with me as to where I should take the boat? Is alot of water to cover for one trip. Feel free to PM me with any advise that you'd prefer to keep from public eyes.

Any other areas you guys could recommend that's got boat rentals and a promising outlook for a day? I could drive further out as well to widen the fishing areas.

Any tips are appreciated!

Honestly just be very careful on simcoe with a boat rental. Those small aluminum boats could easily get dangerous out there with the waves simcoe produces. If you want somewhere fun that you can catch pike all day and bass, go to Little Lake in Barrie. 60 bucks for the full day you can't go wrong, especially since it really is a little lake and can easily get on fish!

Thanks for the tip about little lake. Fun is exactly what I'm aiming for to end my vacay.

I see that warning alot about simcoe and the aluminum boats. Will keep that in mind! Thanks.

+1 for Little Lake...nice little lake with some good fish. My son and I spent the day on the lake and got into a bunch. No records mind you, but lots of fun! Head across the lake and drag some spinners through the reeds!

Thanks OCD! Most likely will head there. Just look into rice lake a bit more now so we'll see where i end up! Probably cheaper boat rental price will get my money lol.

Simcoe is out.. i don't want to go out there on my own the first time lol. Safety first as always.

I can say that the boat was in great shape, motor was very easy to start and the lake is not too big and so not intimidating at all....ESP if you are going out by yourself. My son goes there all the time and he loves getting boats from there. Very good pricing and you can get there very early and stay out till practically dark. I'll message him and see if he has the number.

That'd be awesome OCD! If the hours are early enough to catch the morning feed then I'd be sold for sure!

Ok...he thinks the name of the place is Cedar Park (I think he might be right...but I was only there once)...and he thinks you can actually pick up the boat at 5am on the weekends...includes a tank of gas..and you can fish until dark (at least that is what my son is telling me). Sounds like your best bang for your buck! And they will supply the temp boaters license (the boy is pretty sure on that...but not positive...since we both have our boaters card).

I'm sold. 5am start and all day for $60 is amazing.

I have my boaters card even though I don't go boating much so that works out well!

You might want to call tomorrow though..they book up very fast as you can no doubt imagine. LOL..the boy was all excited..he thought it was info for me! So we could get out and fish again...lol..but right now I'm more liking the river fishing.

you actually don't need to have the boaters card to rent a boat, the 15min safety talk at the dock is enough apparently.........complete BS if you ask me, but i don't make the laws

Yea I agree, we hear so many stories of people on rice lake going out in a tin boat with 6 guys and flipping the boat and drowning... I do not agree with it. Mind you, the license is easy to get and people do not always abide by the laws. It sucks that there are places out there who are willing to put that many people on a boat regardless!

Seems odd that the licence would be waved for people renting boats. I would think that if any boaters should have some initial training it would be unexpired people renting boats. Drowning deaths often have things in common like alcohol and not wearing a life jacket. I have heard lots of guys are found with their fly's down when they are recovered

Thanks for the tips for that lake guys. I spent alot of time on the water on Sunday and it was fun! It's a bit more challenging though having one person on these tin boats. Start motor, stop motor, either anchor down or drift and depending on wind conditions it usually took me tothe wrong places so lots of time learning how to control the thing lol.

I'm one of those guys you're all talking about.. i have a license because it was ridiculously easy to get, but no real boating experience. First thing i was told when i got into the boat on Sunday was the following, "You don't need to wear the lfie jacket. Putting it under you and use it as a seat". Not good advise that's for sure. I'm going to buy my own PFD and take it with me in future outtings.

As for the fishing.. .boy is it different fishing from a boat. LOL.

I got into some pike pretty early and missed some hook sets on others, but theni wanted to chase some bass so went to the lily pad areas. Didn't land any, but missed about 4 huge strikes where one broke my line just as i tried setting the hook. Trick to it i guess is don't yank that hook from their mouths as soon as they break the surface, give it a second and then hookset. Again, learning experience. Maybe it was just me, but i definitely found it challenging - which was fun. Called it a day after 7.5 hours :p

More lessons' learned: Having your stuff in a backpack like i do when shore fishing is NOT a good idea. Need to be organized and have things be easily accessible. Know where your stuff is so you don't have things just laying about where you trip over them. Fun times haha.

Will definitely do it again that's for sure. Thanks again guys!

nice report on the fishing and learning. i'm on my 5th year of using inflatable and 3 summer with a motor. learn something pretty much every other time. how to make things more efficient and more convenient and safer. you're definitely going through the process.

and you're learning like how i did about the bass. and i love fishing for them in the pads. it's a challenge that i like. because once you do hook them, they have the leverage of running around and snagging your hook on a root. the challenge is on how to get them out of there quickly before they do that. best to keep that rod tip way up after you hook them properly and reel fast.

another place is island lake in orangeville. but that's $60 for half a day. only did it once because there were 4 of us and we really only wanted to go for 4 hours.

heard many good things about the one up there in barrie. know some guys that regularly go for that deal. and the pontoons too can be fun for a family.

The price has been increased though from the $60 to $75 but still, from 5am till 8pm for that kind of money is ok with me.

I've had bass hit a surface lure and all that but the first one shocked me a bit . I was past the lily pads and just ripping it back to the boat to cast again and it was such a savage hit and surface break about a foot into open water lol. So rather than ripping it back just to get it to the boat in future casts, that was now the technique to catch em and that's what they were hitting for me. No tubes or worms being finessed did the trick but a creature bait ripping away from them triggered those strikes. Tons of fun!

It took a while to get them to hit though I found. Is that generally the case? Piss them off enough and they'll hit?

I've been thinking about the inflatable lately and it would probably be a great addition. Could be next on the saving up for something list

If you go to this place called Talbot Marina out in Beaverton lake simcoe, they rent out boats there as well. But this place Is located in the canals that lead into lake simcoe and there is some good fishing in there too, you don't even need to go out into the open water.
