A few cold nights is all it took to turn on the fall aggression. This evening's pike were hitting hard, and pulling like bass. I caught 3, but only landed 2 as the big one of the night was not within reach and I was without a net. I caught it off a high dock, in relatively clear water, and got to watch it come up and smash my spoon. It took several very hard runs. It was well over 5lbs but under 10lbs.
I was using a leader tonight, and without a leader I bet I would have caught even more. I put on the leader because I figured that I'd rather sacrifice getting the big #'s if it meant increasing my chances of hooking a big one. I didn't get any monsters but the 7 to 10 pounder was a beautiful specimen.
The first pike of the night, which I call my "stink pike" or "scent pike". Get some of its smelly slime on your lure, and suddenly your lure has a powerful attractant for bigger pike.
