Rice Lake Master
So I decided to head up to the cottage this weekend to do a couple of things.
First, get it open and ready for the upcoming season and second, hopefully hook into some of the monster Crappie slabs that Rice Lake holds. Headed up Friday before lunch and made it up there around noon. First thing I did was have a frosty beverage with my neighbour Mike. After my frosty ALE, I then went and turned the power on and unloaded the car as well as the boat. Boats make great trailers for hauling stuff around. We then decided to pull out the sticks for the first time this year and we headed across the lake for our first round of golf.
Weather was warm and sunny just like the predicted. All in all, a great afternoon of golf, shot an 86 as well, which isn't bad for the first time out. Got back and chilled out, had a few more beers, had dinner, watched some TV and called it a night. Had an early start ahead of us so I could meet the second goal for the weekend which was fishing.
Got up the next morning and tried to get the water going. Had a couple of small leaks so after some careful soldering, the water was up and running. Next, I put my waders on and I put my jetski lifts into the water.

After that came the extremely heavy boat lift as well as the dock. At some point during this task, I was hit by a roque wave and my waders filled up with the cold water. I had to take a minute to catch my breath. Man was it cold. I took them off to drain the water and I quickly warmed up as it was a beautiful afternoon. After that was put in, it was time to drop the boat into the water and drive it into the lift. SWEET, getting closer to fishing. 8)

Still have the canopy to put on though, tried that on Sunday but it was just to windy.
From there we got the neighbours dock and lift into the water. I can smell the fish now, they were getting closer. Weather was still warm and sunny. After a late lunch, early dinner, it began to cloud over but we decided to finally go fishing.
We headed out in the boat and it began to get darker by the minute. I went to a nesting spot from previous years.

Red dot marks the spot. Rigged up and casted over the side. felt a few drops a short time later. Got darker so we headed back. Got into the boathouse just in time as it got quite nasty. This pic is just at the beginning of the storm.

After a few hours of nasty, wicked weather, i decided to at least do some fishing, so I grabbed my gear and worked my dock in the pitch black. After about 10 minutes I feel my line go down, so I pull and I have something on the end of my line. I am very excited to see what it was . I knew it was to heavy to be a Crappie, unless it was a monster , yet to small to be a Bass . after a short fight, I pull it up and to my surprise it was a nice sized, channel catfish.

Caught on a blue Northland jig head using a Berkley Waxie. First fish from the lake for the year.
Sunday was here way to fast, so after doing some cleaning and getting everyting in order, i decided to head back to the city.

Now that everything is in order, I will be looking for some fishing partner hookups, this week and on the weekend.
Cheers,
Dirk.....
