Well heres my situation..
i love to fish even if i dont get any.. but it seems every river has a different way to fish it...
i am what one calls a "Rube" lol very new to "real" trout fishing... only in the last 2 year have i been getting bigger better trout..
but i find when i go up north i have to change my fishing set ups often, and i never really get any fish.... when i fish south tribs i tend to get and land alot more fish......
i can name a few rivers that i get skunked no matter what, but my buddy will land 10.. and i will have him help me on my set up!! i consider him a pro...lol
and even with his help, i still dont have any luck...

i find it hard to ask for help on here, when i cant give the name of the river..... as im sure many people can agree that, each river has its own way to be fished.....
i know the basic's are the same for most of the rivers... but some rivers require a special touch, or certin color... ect...

to me, giveing a name of a river is no biggie. but yet again, other's dont want anything to be said about some rivers... river names only give people a large clue as to where to fish, eg . the info is in the reg books.
i think it would make a person pick up the reg book and maybe take a look at the river to see where they can even fish.. and for what types of fish.... (thats what i do when i see a name of new river i havent fished..)

i hope theres a way i can figure out how to fish the different rivers all over ontario... with 20% luck of getting one..

you just gotta put more time in, after a couple days of fishing a new river ill have some new strategies to use next time I go back. Maybe just give a description like "a small creek up north on lake B" or "A big river far on the far west end of Lake O"

I dont really care if you post a river name, if I have fished it ill give you my experience...you are within the forum regulations to post the name of the river, just not the specific spot.

Logjam, even better, keep the name of the trib to yourself. Next thing you know, you'll see someone else's fishing report photos on here by another user.

Anyhow, try to keep a detailed report what kind of setup you're running and what kind of setup your friend is running.

Most of the time, if your bait isn't in the strike zone, nothing will work. That's the fun part of steelhead fishing, it's trying to figure out what makes them tick. Sometimes roe bags work, other times it's the pink worm, and other times real worms.

Try everything out if you can.

You've probably thought of these scenarios, but just in case:
bait type
bait colour
hook size
depth of your float
length of our leader
spacing of split shots
location of split shots
where you cast
mending your line

Man, it can go on forever, but essentially, try them all out.

I gotta go with Nado on this, you just have to put in the time. Try different things, both techniques and baits or lures. The time will allow you to find out what will work for you. Patience is a virtue when it comes to fishing. I will give you an example. A number of years ago my Dad and I flew into a lake near Temagami to fish Smallies. We were dropped off at the lake late in the afternoon and set up camp. On one of my Dads first casts he hooked a huge Bass ( about 6 or 7 lbs) and got it into the boat. He looked at me and said " If the fishing is going to be this good we'll let this one go." We spent the next 3 days using all our traditional methods to try and get Bass and only landed a few small pike. We cast lures and bait around fallen trees. On rocky shoals and where there were large rocks in 20 ft of water, all the usual suspects.
I should mention this was before fish finders and sonars in the boat.
The lake we were on was also known for Lakers and since we weren't getting Bass, I suggested we stop over some deeper water and toss a few casts for the hell of it. I tossed out a willow leaf and let it sink to the bottom. As soon as I started my retrieve, bang a 4 lb Smallie. We both put worms on hooks and dropped them to the bottom, about 50 ft and spent the next 3 days catching Bass after Bass. 2 to 5 lbs, but nothing as big as the one Dad caught the first night. But we must have caught 100 after we found where they were and what they wanted..
This actually worked for me 2 years ago too, I was at a lake known for Smallies and Lakers near Algonquin. I wasn't equipped to fish Lakers and have never really fished them anyway, but I was getting no Bass, so I moved out over deeper water and I again found them in 40 to 50 ft of water.

LOL. You must have been writing while I was Rabbit, but couldn't agree more.

I'm more or less in the same boat as LJ, so to speak. The only 'bows I have caught have been on lures, even though I've tried roe quite a bit and though many folks catch many on roe. One thing I realized of late is that I should be changing bags often because apparently 'milk out'.

As far as specific rivers are concerned, I don't see harm in posting them here, at least not some of them. For e.g. the Notty has many miles of fishable water. I don't see how giving somebody tips on what may work on a given river would greatly increase the traffic on the river. I live on the Notty but find it hard to fish because there are very few well defined pools. OTOH, I have fished the Bighead which is quite different , a very different river with fairly well defined pools so that a relative novice like me can read the water.

BTW, why is this thread in the insanity subforum? What's so controversial about this subject?

i started this topic in here due the recent topics and arguing over river names in reports given by members.
one of my first reports was gonna be about a few tribs up north in late oct. but when i posted about my day, and giveing only the names of the tribs, i got a lot of back lash from it and "felt" that i had to remove my posting...
since then i havent bothered to much...

I know alot of people dont want names of northern tribs in the public's eye. I have a lot of hard time fishing the rivers up there, compared to the lake O tribs.... each river up north is different from the next.. and as compared to lake O tribs.

i too have only had one type of fishing technique work more for me 9 times out of ten, thats bottom bouncing worms in low fast waters.. small spinners in pools. and only untill this year i started using floats... or bobbers as i called them before i knew how to use the right knids..... its hard to use these techniques when fishing a hole or chute filled with "floaters" . there for i must try new ways of fishing... and like i said they waor awesome most times on lake O tribs, but eles where... forget it.. lol

Hopefully enough people will read this, and i may feel better about posting more reports in the future.. with out makeing others get there panties in a knot...

This is garbage, who cares if you name the river. Its like all of a sudden people are going to start yelling at you because you tell them you fish in ontario! ( SHHHHH youre not allowed to say ontario, you have to say canada) ef that. A while ago I put out a detailed report of location and fish caught and on what, no one complained, still, im usually the only one fishing there anyways. So, my question to you, where abouts are you fishing? Is it in canada? in ontario? Lake ontario, erie, or huron, gbay?

Best of luck

try aluminum lake...good run of rainbow chubsuckers and atlantic stickleback.i recommend fishing with a CIL wabbler...but seriously PM me if your going to GB we might know a guy who can help you out with catching the wild ones up here lake O is easy cause their all hatcherytards

Gotta think like a fish bro...

I remember fishing an Erie trib some years ago--perfect off-colour conditions, water temps, etc. Thought we would crack em' that day........NOTHIN but NOTHING.
AND YOU KNOW THEY'RE STACKED IN THERE!! Switch it up--find the recipe.

You know with the off-colour I had to go 2lb tippet and a #14 Hare's Ear. These crazy bastards snapped me off more often than not, but what a crazy frenzy it was finally.

hmmmm...i used to fish a loop from time to time and we would use a tapered tippet that whould go from say 8lb at the nail knot down to 3lb at the hook

I was just confused because for fly fishing a typical setup is tapered leader, tippet, flurocarbon. Tippet isnt flurocarbon so I was just surprised that is was being used as a leader for steelheading.
