I want to start building my fishing rods. I need info like what do I need, the tools, where to buy the stuff, etc. Any links are good too. Remember I know NOTHING about this.

Thanks!

View attachment 12218I Googled "Making Fishing Rods. Naturally 1000's of Sites. A LOT of them are from Retail Establishments selling Rod Building Kits. They ain't cheap! I'm assuming you'd like to build Yours from Scratch.

I found one site that is a Real Rod Building Forum. They have about 1,200 Pages of topics!! I went to the page on Basic Questions. A LOT of good stuff, just in there. I did a Screen Capture on it if I can get it on here.

Grabbed The Link also. HERE (Maybe) http://www.rodbuilding.org/faq.html (Cut & Paste)

I don't know what's going on with this Downloading from My Computer. It use to be easy! Anyway. Here's Hoping Catfish!!

I have done some rod work Catfish. You have some fly tying experience so that helps...you will need some tools that can be easily made. If your thinking of going into this as a business....forget it....not worth it and way to much competition. If just for satisfaction or building for friends and stuff then its fun. The Mudhole is a great source for all the materials as is Mojos on ebay for cork. You will need a wrapper, either hand wrapper or a power wrapper, you can buy one or build one. You also need a drier, same deal....buy it or build it. I built all of my stuff....used a barbeque rot motor for the dryer and a sewing machine motor for the wrapper. I will try to post some photo's to give you a better Idea.
Head over to Batson or Mudhole and watch the videos...Rodbuilders.org is another good site. Any other questions, ask away...

Welcome back.

rodbuilding is actually a very good site. just some much info to look over.
its either you start with hand wrapping, or investing in a power wrapper/dryer

if you have the space and really want to go power, get a power wrapper/dryer unit, then get a seperate dryer with 2 stands.
then get an assorted thread set which gives you plenty of line to work with, some eva or cork grips, sandpaper, rod dowels, cups, brushes, epoxy, clear coat,

mudhole has good cheap blanks to play with, like the 6' ones for a few bucks. maybe make some and give to family friends or kids.

only bad thing is shipping from mudhole in florida.

Hey there................i'm just new to the board today and read your posts. Perhaps I can answer some of your questions.
There are many things to consider before you just jump into rod building.
