rod case options

Hi guys, how do you store/transport your larger pier fishing rods?

I have a 2 piece 9'6" rod that I need a case for. do they make rod/reel cases that big? That would be ideal as I'd rather leave the reel attached (leave more space in the tackle box!). I have the largest plano rod/reel case from basspro that it wont fit anything more than an 8' with the reel on.

BTW, I couldn't find one long enough for one of my rods at Lebaron's when I was going to Cuba (that was back in April)

This would be the way to go.

But I don't see the problem with transporting a 2 piece 9'6" rod to and from fishing destinations? Are you shipping them?

I was worried about damaging the rod eyes in my car and when i store it...

I was actually looking for a case that you can keep the reel attached to. I just find it much more convenient as I can walk out to the piers with it slung over my shoulder and only have a small tackle box that doesnt need to carry my reel.....

If it's a decent quality rod, the chances of the guides being damaged while in transport are pretty slim.

If you're set on getting a case, I would check LeBaron as I recall that they have a few to choose from. Also with a space for your reel as well.

It's a St. Croix Avid, but still, ive had rod eyes chip or break in the past....

I have the largest rod/reel combo case from Plano that Lebarons/Basspro stocks and it will only fit an 8'6" with reel on if the butt on the rod is very short.....

The resort I was at happened to have a long pier that extended out into the ocean. Unfortunately, the handle of my reel broke on my first cast. One of the Cuban entertainment staff members was very happy to take the broken reel off my hands (along with the full spool of fresh power pro and some assorted lures weights and hooks)

So, depending on your resort, you can find a place to shore fish nearby. There are however some charter boats that will take you out.

If you go to a smaller store that caters to float fishermen you should be able to find a case in which you can store your rod with the reel still attached. I have one that will hold a 2 piece 13 foot rod with my float reel attached. This case is as large as they come and are just larger versions of the smaller cases that you probably looked at. I normally don't use the case unless i'm taking someone with me.There are cases for all rods &reels up to the case I mentioned.

I've fly fished in Cuba. There are some locations that do not allow DIY fishing, and you need to hire a boat and guide. Cayo Largo is controlled by the Avalon Fishing Charters. I think you can still fish from shore or on your own on the flats in the northern cayos (Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo, Cayo Santa Maria, Cayo Ensenachos, ect.) If you plan on doing this, research your destination first. For example, I've heard that Varadero is not the best place to fish, however the east side of the peninsula presents good DIY opportunities in some areas for the persistent fisherman. Bridges are popular spots, but it's illegal on some of the causeways (Cayo Santa Maria). There are also some inland lakes with good bass fishing.

I think the best tip i could give anyone when it comes down to buying a good rod case is to NEVER CHEAP OUT. I once bought a rod case that was 20 bucks and the first day i had it i put it into my car and placed my tackle on top and CRACK the thing just broke and 3 rods snapped. So i then went to Basspro and bought a 90$ case and it has worked perfect for 3 years now .

With a pvc tube you can still keep the reel on...you just have to cut a slot with a jigsaw or hacksaw so the reel sticks out of the tube...you could also fashion a sling for the tube with small screws and 1 hour epoxy. It'll last for years and years for a great price!

Must be one heck of a long gun case!! .50 machine gun case anyone? or maybe for an old 8 or 10 guage goose gun.
