that is why i suggested the ugly stik. long enough for river, short enough for shore fishing or bass. 65 bucks plus tax. then SHE has roughly 120 to spend on a good spinning reel.
plus its near impossible to break an ugly stick

i bought mine bass pro in Vaughn. call and make sure they have the spinning version. i bought the casting.

Thanks all very much for the info. Keep it comin if you have something to say. It helps so much :)

Shimano Sienna REAR DRAG! Best 50$ spinning reel I've purchased. Buy a longer ugly stick as mentioned 7-8 foot. 8' is plenty for Eastern lake O ditches. Spend the extra cash on quality float tackle as i assume you already have some bass tackle.

A good all around rod and reel combo that I own and absolutely love if u like using a bait caster. I would suggest getting the LEWs speed spool reel and the Powell diesel rod. absolutely amazing quality for the price and its great for casting spinners/cranks/jerkbaits or dragging texas rigs/carolina rigs /jigs. (low cover to open water)

If u want a bait caster I personally think this is a great starter setup for bass and pike.
