If I were to use a fast/x-fast tipped rod for crankbait, do I "choke" some of the lure's action, just by using a stiffer tip? Whats the motive for using mod-fast tips for crankbaiting?

The action of the rod itself doesn't affect the lure's action, but with a fast action rod you can impart extra action to the lure just by the flick of your wrist. You can also rip the lure out of weeds more easily and get better hooksets. With a slower action rod you can make longer casts and also fight fish on lighter line without worrying about the line breaking. Most crankbait rods seem to have a fast action.

The softer rod is also going to help prevent the fish from spitting the hook, and the rod will help in making sure you don't rip the lure right out of the fishs mouth when you set the hook . Right now I'm using a mh moderate fast baitcast rod for a lot of my crankbaits and jerk baits. I find the moderate fast is a good compromise between a softer rod and a stif action rod, it's also stiff enough where it's ideal for jerk baits.

The tip would still matter but the mono would help in that it still gives you the extra stretch. A moderate fast or a fast tip with mono would work fine for crankbaits because there's still enough give to the rod and you also have the stretch from the mono. I would avoid using an Xtra fast even with mono. On my moderate fast rod I use braid because I still get the sensitivity and softness of the rod at the same time. Remember there's not one rod that everybody will agree for a certain technique, alot of it has to do with what your comfortable with as well.
