Salmon and leaders

they are very much line shy, we noticed it today, they would move out of the way constantly from 8-10lb leader, switchedto 6lb, got more strikes and follows

I see them moving away from 12lb mono. Tried few days later with proper setup. 12lb main and 6lb fluro. I noticed some follows on beads and roe, not line shy. Lost one to a leader break. So angry. May try going up to 8lb fluro next time.

I do. It prevents me from losing everything instead of having mainline breaks and possibly losing float, swivel etc.

Also you never know what other fish may be in the pools that the salmon are in, might be a brown, atlantic, steelhead etc, that are line shy for the most part. Basically increases your chances of catching one of those in my opinion.

salmon not line shy ha ha ha, next time pay attention at how the fish will literally stack up at the back of the pool because some one is using heavy mono or a sinking fly fishing line. using beads i typically run a 18-24 inch leader with not shot of 8 lb seaguar flour carbon.

No need for leaders when doing dental work  .

But yeah, they're pretty line shy.

salmon have amazing eye sight so ya I would say leader is worth it. Salmon almost always move out of the way of debris drifting down river to them and the line just seems like something they should avoid to them. Leaders also save tons of time after the countless break offs that happen. Lighter line will mean more hookups but those hookups dont do much good when you cant land the fish. I used to use 8lb but switched to 10lb lead this year and im loving it.

NADO you running 10lb main ? What leader you using? I just got 8lb seaguar vs my 6. After snapping my 6lb on a salmon. I find seaguar to be the best, red label is good but I'm going to try the abrazx. Red label is .010 for 8lb while abrazx is .009. @ $25 per spool..better be worth it.

haha yes I got that goodentight. Thanks!

Im going to re-spool main line today at basspro with 10lb mono. I hear Maxima is really good quality....and easily available at BP. Any feedback ?

Oh, another question. Green or clear line? I always thought clear was the best since...well...its clear! But trolling some forums where people fish for king, coho and others are saying green is the way to go....

was on a eastern ditch yesterday... normally I fish larger water out on the west and GB tribs for salmon... however they were extremely line shy, now I'm sure this has to do with the smaller body of water or something? From my experience on larger tribs this has not been the case within reason that is...

a leader is a must!!!!

salmon i use 12lb main and 6-10lb leader. steel i use 10 main and 4-6 leader.

all depends on water conditions and where im fishing. if the water is stained then you can get away with a heavier leader, if its gin and fish are not aggressive then size way down. as for main line color, i dont think it comes into play too much if your using a leader. that being said i have both a moss and a yellow line. different strokes for different folks!

I don't use a leader when I river fish for salmon, I think salmon are not line shy and they hit out of aggression. How many of you guys use a leader in the rivers for salmon?
Are you referring to float fishing, or using lures? With lures it doesn't seem to effect the hook-ups, but I prefer to use a leader in case I sang on the bottom or on a tree---that way I don't lose a lot of line.
