What's a redd? I'm assuming a pair of mating fish? how would you identify it, vs say a pair of fish resting in a current?

a fish nest. redds are really big. you can tell they're redds by the oval shaped clean rocks on the bottom of the river. They're usually in fast shallow water. Don't worry. Do a few drifts :)

ignorant people... theres a differnce between not knowing how to do things properly and just straight up sucking at legit fishing so u have to sight fish in the shallows.

Pedro/Rapala boy, from what I gather, you’re a kid with 4 months worth of trib fishing experience (who’s also been banned from a bunch of other forums and gets most of what he knows off of youtube). Knowing a few of the guys personally on this board, I have no doubt you just lost a whole lot of respect from people who could potentially help you become a better angler and speed up your learning curve. Your know-it-all attitude holds little substance – The more experienced members see right through it. Maybe you need to mature a little more before you continue on spewing BS to the masses.

Blah Blah Blah. Since when is fishing redds illegal? It's a good way to get LEGIT strikes from both the trout and salmon. I didn't wanna get LICENSETOPIN pumped, but I didn't like your comments. What's this about youtube and the 4 months? lol I only use youtube for music videos and funny junk!

It isn’t illegal...It’s unethical...Get that through your head. You’re damaging our fisheries because of it. There are a number of ways to get hits from migratory fish without pulling them off their spawning beds when they are most vulnerable. Unfortunately some people have to resort to cheap tactics in order to catch fish in shin deep water.

Fact is L2P was pumped before I stepped in. I only gave you (and the rest of OFF members) logical points to why fishing redds is unethical and shouldn’t be done.

It's unfortunate that today's youth is far less conservation minded and far less respectful to the resources we are blessed with. I'm just Hoping the resources we have today will continue on for future generations.

Sorry, but I just can't get the unethical part in my head.

Don't worry! I'm sure the future will be OK

And that’s why you need to mature a little more before spewing BS on public forums…But then again, that’s just my opinion.

I’d hate to think that all the fish you’ve landed this fall were flossed/lined because ‘it’s legal’

Something can be legal yet still be morally wrong or unacceptable - An example in layman's terms for the word 'unethical'

I just wanted to post an opinion in the hopes that other people feel it's ok to target fish that are spawning in the redds.

Perhaps the Ministry should apply the same rules, like bass, when they're spawning. Let nature takes its course. As humans, we've already done enough damage to this planet and we should do what we can to preserve what we have.

I'm not a tree hugger by any means, but I do want this sport of fishing to continue a healthy course. Disrupting fish in their natural elements while they spawn is not a form of positive fishing.

Fishing in the redds may not be illegal, but laws themselves are never perfect and serve as a guideline to what people should try to achieve. I'm sure snagging is totally legit in places outside of Ontario, but it's illegal and ethically wrong to purposely hook a fish any where other than its mouth. Try to place the same perspective when you're in the waters.

Very well put.

While I like the enthusiasm Rapala Boy has for fishing, I think (like others have said) he needs to be more respectful towards the sport. I mean how many fish do you really need to catch? How desperate are you that you can't leave them alone to spawn?

rapalaboy you should go back a couple grades.... im not even joking your as ignorant as a 12 year old that wants nothing more than to cause trouble and talk shit. dude ur grd 11 so assuming ur 17-18. ur almost an adult belive it or not, hahah that made me laugh a little. there are people that are telling you straight up the difference between right and wrong and still your "smart" enough to say some negative in return. these ppl that are trying to help u learn how to not only be a good fisherman in a sense that u fish properly but also to be a good "fisherman".
you wouldnt cross another anglers line or wouldnt walk through a pool that someone is fishing, this is all part of being an ethical fisherman and so is not fishing for a 30 lb salmon with half its back sticking out of the water because u couldnt get one in a pool. its sad only cause theres more fish that stack up and sit in the deeper pools than the one or two you guys target while they mate.

bringing up the fact that fishing in redds is not illegal is so childish in so many ways, jay walking is 100% illegal but people do it all the time right so its okay? wrong i work on queen st. and while many ppl dont get jaywalking tickets plenty more have to deal with getting sideswipped or getting hit cause they were too lazy to walk over to the crosswalk.

btw pedro u say fishing in redds is a good way to get strikes from bows and salmon. just wondering how manny bows have u ever caught period? got any pics cause from what ive seen u only post pics of spawned out chinnies and a brown that could have been " redd fished" ive been fishing for steelies for as long as uve been a little virgin and not once have i heard or witnessed steelies in 1-2 ft hit anything, rule of thumb. if u can see them in that little amount of water, their spooked. not saying u cant fish them and get them to hit but thats almost impossible. just curious what lb and type of leader u usually run?

Lately I've been ignoring sightfishing. But still, I really don't mind getting some bows that are feeding on eggs that are coming off redds. Gotta admit i've lined a few fish that almost had their backs sticking out, but the best action I've had were fishing deep pools were my float would get sweeped down. I don't know if you know this, but I don't really feel too good pulling fish off redds , but I do a few drifts on them to avoid a skunk. I also got a bit pumped after reading kestral's post so I may have said too much. The feeling of pulling one out of deep water is much better than sightfishing for vulnerable fish IMO. It's my first year of successfully busting fish continually. My first steelhead came last spring. I hope you can understand.

Right now I use 10lb leader for salmon. Once their gone I guess I can go back to six, but i've lost a couple of giant steelhead at the willy last spring on 6lb fluorocarbon cuz of logs. I'm gonna stick to the 10lb leader for now :) Ronald (ex0or) hooked up with 7 on 10lb test last week...

dude i honestly couldnt care less what other ppl do, its their lives not mine. all im sayin is yes ur not breaking the law but your making the worst name for your self in the whole fishing community. i think that goes much farther than any fishing offence. but then again who am i to you, right?

I know people get upset with the situation, but I don't think name calling and condescending remarks are warranted. We are here to lend help and support one another. Displaying an attitude of the former doesn't help to resolve things.

Trust me man someone that still calls me rapala boy just doesn't like me :) I know cuz it's happened before! :D

By the way I think that the mnr has the open sections open because it can handle fish being taken off of redds or harvested.........

If they decide which parts to open by seeing how many fish return each year, then probably. If they calculate the amount they think will be harvested by x amount of anglers then probably not. Also, there is that fact that harvesting results in 1 or 2 fish being taken (most of the time), nest destruction is ~5,000 potential fish.
