First off, I must say that this was my first time salmon fishing. Furthermore, I'm just starting to get back into fishing and haven't done much since I was about 15.
My father-in-law part owns a boat thats at the Bronte harbor in Oakville and he figured it would be some fun to take both is son-in-laws out with his brother. Also, this meant they could have another 2 lines in the water as they were entered in the salmon derby. We left at approx. 8am on July 29th and returned at 1pm as the wind was really starting to pick up. At the mouth of the harbor as we were leaving, a man was on a pile of rocks that protruded into the lake (spot highlighted on map below) and was pulling in a fish. Seemed like a pretty decent spot to do some shore fishing and I'll likely give it a shot soon and do a report for it should it be successful.
Anyways, as I previously said, this was my first time salmon fishing - so I might get some things confused on this part.
We had 6 lines in the water - 2 of which had herring on them. Two rods landed all 5 of the fish that we caught while we were out there, none of which had the herring on them but rather had a "monkey puke" spoon and a watermelon spoon on them. Monkey puke is orange while watermelon fades green to pink. Both I do believe are common use colours for salmon fishing. We found that the most productive depth was at around 105 with the fish sitting between 40-50. We mostly stayed around the harbour, maybe only going 5-6km's east max. Posting a map for it would be fairly useless unless you want to see a picture of blue water .
Anyways, here is my first salmon catch. It was the biggest of the day for us, but probably only weighed about 6 pounds:
and for the record, I was smiling for the photo originally - but it took them about 9 trys to actually get the camera to work.
Anywho, if I missed anything - lemmie know and we shall see if I remember
