What would be your ideal rod for plug fishing river salmon with. I am putting together my river setups and have a centerpin and spinning rod for steelhead ready to go, but need a rod for tossing plugs for Chinook in the fall. I normally fish J-11s and Hot N Tots, with the occasional J-13 and big spinner. I was thinking an 8'6'' M Wild River St. Croix.

Thanks for all the help.

i hear this is a great rod for that. biggest and only issue is budget.
avid Series® Salmon & Steelhead Spinning Rods

I have a 7' quantum energy im7 bass rod myself. iti s pretty good, but ifi t was little longer i would be able to control the fish better.

Shimano clarus steelhead spinning/casting rod. I have the 9' medium heavy, 8-12 and use it for spoon chucking, lure fishing in the rivers and even have had others use it on float fishing steelhead. If I were to do it again I'd get the 10' medium, acts more as a catapult when casting and is better for float fishing. $100

I'm looking for a rod as well for river plugs and spoon chucking but I'm not sure what size to get.

I was using my bass rod for plug fishing salmon. St.croix Avid 7ft medium/fast...it did the job but I would want it just a bit longer.

You can see from this video that the rod was making noises.

shimano ugly stiks are good pump. Inexpensive and will do the job. I'm not sure if they have 9ft or longer. Good for casting. or get the Okuma celilo steelhead casting rod. it goes for about $59.99 at alflaherty's (i think) i would prefer 8'6" or maybe longer (more expensive).

why under gun yourself? Never got guys landing salmon on light rods with light leads. Yeah you can easily brake off a snagged fish but there's no fight with 6-8lb line and the fish survival rate is lower. Some true beef sticks will do the job nicely, 10-14, 10-20 west coast style rods are available in longer lengths than some other rods. Lots of cheap fly blanks out there too. A 8-9w 9-10ft conversion would be a sick lake O salmon rod or go even longer and have a rod capable of float fishing fresh kings on big water.

Put the tits to the fish and see what the bitche$ got in em!
