so with fall coming closer and closer, eveyone is planing catching salmon.
i tried salmon fishing last fall for the first time, cought only 6 fish but this year want to make it better.
used 8-6 ugly stik lite last year, but this year is time for upgrade.
so anyway what rod suggestions would you guys recommend?
will use for spoons 2/5-3/4 oz, 10lbs pp.
btw just got shimano convergence 10' medium slow, which is kind of what i was looking for, but other suggestions wont hurt, i have 30 days for return.

Long time no chat osteo.

As you know...

I have been using Shimano Convergence 10'0" Medium Power - Slow Action for about 3~4 years now and it sure is good enough. I said good enough, I mean I really force the rod by setting the drag somewhat tight to see how it would handle. Mind you I had 50lb PowerPro at the time so I didn't worry much about line breaking but rod snapping in half but the rod held without a problem. You could use this rod on rivers too... it maybe on shorter side but it is designed more for river than casting lures I think.
Here is the down side to this rod... when I do hook up with one of the bigger freight trains you'll have a hard time brute forcing those fish due to lack of strong backbone on the rod. Other than that it's work great! Good flex helps sling shoot the lures far too.
Frozenfire bought the same rod last year. Not sure how it liked it but he seemed happy. It's good for carp fishing too :D

how you been mickey,
well ill try it out and see what happens.
will see you at the pier in couple of weeks.

I have a 9 foot ugly stik...can hold 6 to 20lb line, is this going to be good enough?, and can anyone recomend a reasonably priced reel, that would be helpfull. Thanks guys

That is more than good enough line rating. Not sure which fishing line you are planning on using but!!
If you decide to use braid line... remember! You buy/use braid line based on the diameter, not the #test rating.

PowerPro 50lb is similar to 12lb mono. I personally use PowerPro 30lb on my reel. Just make sure your reel will hold atleast 200 yard of line.
I also spooled my 2nd with P-Line Premier CX 15lb mono which I want to try. We'll see.

Back to the topic!

Yes your rod should work just fine!

last year i used 8-6 ugly stik lite, it was ok, get little tired after 4 hours of tossing spoons,
but i used 10lb spiderwire so my casts were pretty good. all salmon were in 20lb range and 10lb braid and 17lbs fluorocarbon leader as shock absorber did good.
this year ill use 15lbs though just to get the fish faster.

Ok thanks...time to buy a reel and some line, Yay!!

I have shimano northern series (9.5') and it has never let me down when fishing salmon in the rivers in Owen Sound. I bought this yrs ago but wouldn't trade it for the world. I used 8-10 pound test with a shimano aero reel, again bought this a while ago but I find that it has never let me down.
