Looking to buy my first rod for river fishing steelhead. My Medium 7 foot bass rod isn't cutting it anymore. I'm looking for spinning.

I was considering the 10 foot Shimano Convergence in either Medium / slow OR Light / slow. I'd also like to use the rod to chuck spoons at the pier, so I guess the trade off would be going with the Medium power rod and loosing the line-protecting abilities of the Light power rod...

Any advice?

Shimano Clarus for double-duty. Best bang for the buck. If you want something manageable from the pier, go for the 9'6.

You pretty much summed up the problems with a rod for river fishing steelhead and for chucking spoons. My suggestion would be keep it cheap and go with 2 different rods one medium action and one light action thats a bit longer.

I've got a couple convergences and a couple buddies have em they're good bang for the buck. One of my fishing buddies has 2 browning 6 rivers rods as well. Hes got an 8'6" medium for lure chucking and the 10'6" light for bottom bouncing and floating. They are good rods for the money as well.

Hope this helps.

The Clarus is an extra $40ish, what makes it better?

The graphite was a lot more sensitive. But... I see now the new Convergence is IM7-based, whereas couple years ago it was IM6. The difference between IM6 and the IM8 on the Clarus was worth the difference in price to me. It was just a better feeling rod (smoother and more sensitive).

The difference between IM7 and IM8 might not be worth 40 bucks everything else being equal.
