Saltwater Pier Fishing

As some of you know im going on a trip to Cape Breton from Aug 2-11. Im sure I will have some down time at the end of the days and figured I should try out the infamous "never know what your gonna catch" saltwater piers. Im just wondering what sort of gear/rigs I should bring for this type of fishing. Im thinking I dont have much in the ways of proper gear for this, here is what I have.

7' medium spinning, 8.5' medium spinning, 6'6 Medium Heavy Spinning, 6'6 Medium Heavy Baitcaster, 13' 6-12 float rod, 9' 8wt fly, 9' 4wt fly and a few junk rods. - I'm sure none of these really fit the bill but im not looking to buy anything for the trip.

Most importantly im wondering what sort of rigs and baits will work best?

Hey man! Don't know much in terms of the fishing, but Cape Breton is beautiful!

My sister got married in Ingonish, and I can certainly confirm that there are LOADS of beautiful rivers/streams, and of course salt-water access. I'm not sure what the regs are there, or whats open, but I'm sure you would be able to find some great fish in some of the rivers as well.

Thanks Madoc, I have a fly fishing guide booked in Cheticamp to fish the Margaree or the Cheticamp depending on conditions. The Margaree is a world famous Atlantic Salmon River but i'm apparently coming a bit too late for that. I'll be thrilled if I catch just one Atlantic or a Sea Run Trout.

I have had luck with spinners (blue fox, mepps) and spoons (wablers, cleos ). As for rods I would just use the gear you would use for pike you don't need anything super heavy
But if all else fails just start drowning worms and you can get some pretty interesting fish like a flounder or skate off the bottom

A pickeral or dropper rig with a peice of shrimp was killer in NC last week.

shrimp and worms, sounds easy enough to me. I just picked up an 8.5' 12-25lb rod for chinook kayak trolling so im thinking it will likely be my rod of choice out there.

I was fishing at new haven CT a month ago- got these fish while fishing on low tide conditions, walked at least 300ft from shore on shallow sandy flat water up to 3 ft water level, was wading with my swimming short, lots of big clams all around me, others were picking them by the bucket. Many anglers I spoke to normally used shrimp sold at walmart. I read that using clam meat are also very good. I was in florida , jacksonvile, also wading, some 5lber saltwater trout were landed by others fishing beside me using fresh small bait fish they caught in the area using their nets.

To shore fish on beaches, when the tide is somewhat strong, you need rod holder that can be embedded to the sandy shoreline, Any local fishing store, like walmart, k-mart sells them for $6, I made them by myself from 2" diameter pipe available at home depot. A surf rod of 9-10' long, that can handle 25 lb line , since there might be 4' shark around. I got the fishing rod at BPS US for $20. Shrimp is the preferred bait . fish before dusk or early dawn. need at least 3-5oz weight sinker. water seem to be calmer early evening to night time. Check license registry for shore beach fishing, many state only cost $1.

wow fish fight, those sort of fish are exactly what i'm hoping to stumble upon during my short morning/evening fishing sessions. I have an 8.5' rod that can take 25lb line so that should be close enough. I only have 10lb braid on it though so i'll have to be easy on the drag if I hook into a 4' shark. I've caught 3' dogfish on 8lb mono in 100' of water so anything is possible!

Wow those fish are cool. Not to burst your bubble but in NC a few weeks ago I had no problem with my 8 ft surf rod casting out up to 5 oz sinkers and I caught some decent croaker and spot. I even battled a medium sized sting ray on it with absolutely no issues. It also had 14 lb mono on it so...
