Saturday was a gem ... of a day for fishing .

Oh, what a chilly morning it was . When the sun graced us with it's presence it was oh so warm.
We , being a party of five set out at sunrise and headed down to the river . Overcast and a slight wind chill kept the fingers chilled and hoods on . Worked the river hard , no eddy , run, hole or rapid left undrifted . Lots of yearlings that are dropping back with the adults to the lake , they all range between 1 - 3 pounds . They jump and fight really hard for little guys and are alot of fun . All caught fish and all had a great day , no age barriers with three of us over 50 and two under 20 .
We did quite a bit of hiking and river walking too , I even took a dive when the current pushed my leg up and momentum took over sending me face first into the icey water .
Believe me that water is really cold . After a lunch break and relax , we changed location and finished the day in the deeper holes . Where we found more shakers and a few larger drop backs . Another friend and his young son met up with us in the afternoon . This young kid fought and landed a four lb. fish unaided using a twist float reel and 8 foot rod , talk about starting early . Troutchaser landed a nice hen drop back and a huge sucker later in the day .We fished til dark , then headed home

Did you know that the record white sucker for Ontario is 5 lbs?? That one looks awful close to that! Cool pics and good update my friend, I fished all day today with only two little panflippers and a lot of smolts, opener can't come soon enough!

Correct! I just noted that last night as well and got suprised. I am sure at least one of the suckers I caught on Saturday was about the same.

Can someone elighten me on the definition of "shaker" and "drop-back" fish

Drop back = a fish which has been up river and has spawned . Now it's" dropping back " to the lake ."
Shaker = a fish usually in the smaller range of 1 - 3 pounds .

I caught one about the same size earlier and without seeing it , I thought I had a huge steelhead on , another person yelled out - carp ...but we have caught larger ones too .

hey guys new to the board. were you guys near the top of whats open season? i saw a bunch of guys packin up around five on my way home. we had similar results a little farther down. skunked today. its getting really clear

I took a nice little spill on Saturday too. Luckily I was able to brace myself with my left arm before the water made it over my waders, my sweater got a nice soaking though. Then sun came out an hour later and I was dry by noon. Very nice report better than my 1/2 day with the one fish I landed being snagged somehow...the first one I've ever managed to snag.

Sometimes when you have a fish on and they jump or spin , the hook transfers from the mouth to another part of the body , purely by accident . I've had fish on , jumping and shaking their heads and then it some how feels different and takes way too long to land . Finally bring the fish in and it"s hooked in the anal fin or somewhere else . It happens .

Thanks for the report. some nice looking fis. and good to see the age variety for sure. I was out sunday morning with jusroc from 545-1045 on the credit. neither one of us had anything on, saw a couple landed but that was it. it was nice though, i got my line wet for the first time, and jusroc picked up his first fly rod on sat so it was his first time out with it as well. I know he went back today had a sucker on, but lost it.

Rare but I guess its possible. It did make a few nice jumps at the beginning which isnt typical of a snagged fish.
