Sheephead/ Freshwater Drum lures

Hey guys, I want to sport fish for some sheephead/freshwater drum!

I have caught them on baits such as shrimp and worms but I want to get into using lures.

What lures and colors are good for targeting sheephead/freshwater drum?
I've read that crankbaits, spoons and jigs work really well but I am not sure what colors or variations would work best.

Any help is appreciated =D

ive gotten them on just about everything, lures, cranks, jigs and plastics, live crayfish seemed to work the best for the bigger 20+ pounders, as well as crayfish imitating deep diving cranks.

sheep head are just....pains in the butt.....really they just about go for anything. i troll on lake erie for rainbow and pickerel and walleye and we use spoons and we usually catch 3-4 sheepheads.

i hate sheephead. i hope u dont eat them....... :???:

Or can you recommend a better place to catch and keep?

When I was a kid, my family would catch them in the Napanee area.

Since they go for the same lures as bass/pike do you think the MNR would believe me if I tell them i'm going for sheephead? when they see me casting spoons/crankbaits/plastics?

they're actually quite good if you smoke them in the kingston/belleville area, the ones from erie taste like rubber though, dont really know why.

Port maitland dunville is known for some big sheephead . Worms work great there though

i wouldnt eat anything from lake ontario....lake erie is bad enough but lake ontario :???: and sheephead eat just about everything. i know the natives eat sheephead. but........i wouldnt eat it.

I've done well with lip-less and dt-9 rapalas. I keep the colours fairly natural.

At what time of tear are they in the rivers ?? Do they have the same spawn times as bass ?

Agree with OPs. Drums take Cleo spoons no problem.

I would check out some spoons. Flashly Spoons or even your ice fishing spoons seem to be the trick with drum, the odd time when their really aggressive. You can switch over to a crank bait. or jerk bait. Drum is a lot of fun to catch but not really a eating fish. Hope this helps
