hey guys, i was fishin a river near me and while i was fishing, among the trout and salmon i spotted what im 99.99999% sure was a sheepshead, even someone fishing near me though it was a sheep's head. Is this normal ? i know theyre bottom feeders so did they come up to eat the salmon eggs like the trout ? i also always thought they were more of a warm water species and this creek is pretty cold, have you guys ever seen this, i know i havent

ive caught sheephead up on the grand.
i believe they feed on zebra muscles n stuff.
im not sure if they eat salmon eggs

Sheepsheads love moderate current. I've caught more sheepshead from rivers than I've caught from lakes. They are not a picky feeder...so it is possibly the fish went upriver to feed on eggs, or on the round gobies in the stream, or on mussels, clams and snails that are often found in rivers.

i caught a sheephead on the grand this year too, my first one!
i believe they feed on gobies and zebra muscles.

also to note, there were alot of gobies on the grand ... i had never caught one there before but this weekend I caught like a dozen... bad news bear!

Oh yeah, I meant the gobies. They are such an invasive species. I have seen them everywhere I have fished.
just recently ive been seeing them in a creek i fish, thankfully theres a dam that prevents them from getting to the upper reaches

Strangely enough, I just caught my 1st Goby last week, then tried a different place on the river and caught more than 20 of the little ba$ards....all ended up in a pile on the bank. Called the MNR this morning to file a report of where they were. Trent waterway...up quite a few locks.

trent has had them for a while, what locks were you at

The Gobies are Thick in Simcoe... Fished the Holland river couple weeks ago, and you could not bottom fish w/o having those Goby bastards taking your bait.. They weren't there last year! Gotta stock Simcoe with Sheepsheads now to control the Goby!!! I'm a new fan of Sheepsheads! :)
